WVBI COVID-19 Update for January 20, 2022

The Health Center has nothing new in its COVID-19 report this morning, which is good news. Just one test outstanding. Total number of active cases is 25.

Yesterday’s state report on COVID-19 covered five days and showed just over 17,000 new cases a day and 31 new deaths a day. That’s a new record for new cases. The tallies pushed the seven day running averages up–for new cases up to 17,589 and for total deaths to 107 (which includes reclassifications). Our region registered 1,252 new cases and five deaths over the five days. 122 of the new cases were in Charlevoix. The deaths were in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Otsego with one each.

No material change in the report on hospital utilization. It’s high overall and very high for COVID-19—though rates at some overstressed hospitals downstate are dropping. No change reported in COVID-19 occupancy at our local hospitals in Charlevoix and Petoskey.

The Flint school system has decided to remain in virtual mode indefinitely. They’ve been operating that way since the first of the year and had been planning to move back to in-person classes this coming Monday. Numerous down state districts have move to virtual classes this month, but it appears that Flint is the only district that has decided to continue in that mode indefinitely. Meantime, districts struggling to stay in person are facing a shortage of COVID-19 tests with some saying they will run out next week if new supplies don’t arrive. There’s no prediction on when the shortage might end.
