Lisa Peacock’s resignation as director of the Health Department of Northwest Michigan is in the news statewide today. She resigned late Tuesday citing a “hostile work environment” created by her board and her health as reasons for the departure. Some members of health department board tried to remove her multiple times last year. Peacock filed a complaint with the Attorney General Dana Nessel alleging that they encouraged people to bully her. At the last meeting of the board, a closed session was held that presumably concerned legal matters concerning Peacock, but there has been no word on what actually transpired. Peacock also serves as health officer for Benzie and Leelanau counties in addition to the counties covered by the Health Department of Northwest Michigan. It isn’t clear whether she will continue in her roles there. Peacock says her last day will be April 29th. In a press release issued yesterday, the Health Department board said she will work on transition matters during that time. A copy of the Board’s press release is available at a link in today’s script online
On COVID-19 data front today, nothing new from the Health Center. Their tally has no positive tests in the last two weeks and no tests pending.
Data from the state released yesterday continues to show good trends. Over the five days covered by the report there were an average of 1,394 new cases a day and 13 deaths a day. 250 reclassified deaths from prior dates were also reported. That pushes the seven-day averages down to 1,186 new cases a day and 62 deaths a day including reclassifications. In our region there were 29 new cases a day and eight deaths over the five days. Charlevoix had six new cases and no deaths. The deaths were in Emmet with three, Grand Traverse with two and Antrim, Leelanau and Otsego with one each. Overall hospital utilization is a little high for all beds, but near normal for I-C-U beds. COVID-19 occupancy remains high, but there was a dramatic drop for I-C-U beds from 17.1% to 9.8%. Locally, no patients at Munson in Charlevoix. McLaren in Petoskey is down four patients overall, but now has three patients in their I-C-U, up from none.
