COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for February 5, 2021

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued new orders yesterday that allow a return to contact sports—subject to masking requirements or, where masks can’t be worn, subject to periodic testing.  The change comes after a large rally last weekend and a lawsuit filed by a group called Let Them Play.  Governor Whitmer says the protest did not influence the decision.  She says they are just following the science.  Until the change, Michigan was just one of two states in the country with a similar ban.

State COVID-19 data continue to show good trends.  There were 1,358 new cases and 11 new deaths. There were also 63 reclassified deaths in the report.  Seven day average for new cases ticked down a bit to under one thousand to 863. For deaths the average is 41 a day—that number still being driven up by reclassifications. In the eight-county region we’ve followed from the start, there were 17 new cases and three deaths. Charlevoix had five new cases. Deaths were in Benzie, Grand Traverse and Leelanau with one each. Seven day running averages for our region are 17 new cases a day and one death.

Statewide there are now 60,841 active cases—down again, but this time only by about 1,000. Still, that’s less than half the number of active cases that we had a month ago. Our region has 1,390—down by about 100.

Positivity rates shown on the state’s Safe Start dashboard continue to look good. Statewide rate is  down three tenths point to 4.8%.  It’s 5.2% in our safe start zone—down a four tenths. The rate in Charlevoix county is up three tenths to 2.4%. The C-D-C target is 3%.  New case per million rates were on a steady slope down—for almost a month for the state, our zone and Charlevoix County. Overall hospital occupancy rates continue to look good both statewide and in our safe start zone—essentially normal.  Statewide, 5.6% of available beds are occupied with COVID-19 patients. For I-C-U beds, COVID occupancy is 9.2%.  There are no COVID-19 patients at Munson in Charlevoix and four at McLaren in Petoskey—all in their I-C-U. That’s up one.

On the island, no new tests.  No tests pending. No new positives since December 7th.

Complete data for our region plus summaries for the state, the T-C safe start zone and the U-P are in today’s script online.
