COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 update for February 22, 2021

President Biden visited Michigan on Friday and, among other things, highlighted the state’s role in the development and production of COVID-19 vaccines.  He said he thinks will be approaching normalcy by the end of the year because of the vaccination effort. He was visiting the Pfizer plant in Portage Michigan where one of the two vaccines now approved for use in the U-S is made.  During the visit, Pfizer said it was ramping up production of its vaccine from five million to ten million doses a week.  Islanders have received both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

COVID-19 data from Friday and Saturday afternoon show continued good trends. There were averages of 914 new cases a day and 43 deaths a day.  That includes 57 reclassified deaths in Saturday’s report. Seven-day running average for new cases is 814. For deaths, the average is 30 a day–with reclassifications included. In the eight-county region we’ve followed from the start, there was an average of 21 new cases a day and one death overall. Charlevoix had one new case. The single death was in Emmet. Seven day running averages for our region are 14 new cases a day and no deaths.

Statewide there are now 35,608 active cases—down by about 2,300 over the two day period. Our region has 748—down by 62.

Statewide test positivity rate is at 3.6%, up two tenths.  It’s 3.6% in our safe start zone, too. That’s up two tenths as well. And the rate in Charlevoix county is down six tenths to 1.1%. The C-D-C target is 3% or less.  New case per million rates continue on a steady slope down.

No update in overall hospital occupancy rates, but they were looking good on Friday—both statewide and in our safe start zone—essentially normal.  COVID-19 occupancy rates looked good, too. [Statewide, 3.7% of available beds are occupied with COVID-19 patients. For I-C-U beds, COVID occupancy is 6.7%.  There are no COVID-19 patients at Munson in Charlevoix and four at McLaren in Petoskey—all in their I-C-U.]

On the island, one new test.  It’s the only one pending. No new positives since December 7th.

Complete data for our region plus summaries for the state, the T-C safe start zone and the U-P are in today’s script online.
