COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for April 19, 2021

Governor Whitmer was on Meet the Press this weekend pressing her view that Michigan’s current surge in cases is not a function of lack of regulation, but instead one driven by lack of compliance—itself a function of COVID fatigue—helped along by the spread of a more contagious variant of the virus.  The Biden administrations lead COVID advisor was also on the show, though not at the same time.  He said the solution was to reimpose lockdowns and that surging additional vaccine doses to Michigan, as Governor Whitmer has asked would create surge problems elsewhere.

Meantime, the state has extended current masking, assembly and social distancing limits and requirements through May 24 and added masking requirements for 2 to 4 year olds. You heard that right.  The state says that even in a small gathering outside, a two year old must wear a mask. Seemingly lost in this is the Presidents inaugural implication that masks would be necessary for just 100 days from January 20.

Amidst all of the back and forth, there are still signs that the surge in new cases in Michigan has reached a plateau—something the governor pointed out in her television appearance yesterday. Friday and Saturday’s reports has an average of 7,243 new cases and 55 new deaths, including an average of 30 reclassifications a day. That puts the state running average for new cases at 6,755, down slightly, and 40 for deaths (including reclassifications), which is up by two. In our eight-county region there were an average of 132 new cases and a total of two new deaths. Charlevoix had 29 total new cases. The deaths were in Otsego and Grand Traverse. Averages are at 120 new cases and 1 death a day.

There are now 166,886 active cases statewide and 3,119 in our region—both of those numbers still building, but not as quickly as they had been. Safe start dashboard has new case count rising for the state, headed down on our zone and flat in Charlevoix County. Positive test rate is 16.9% state-wide, 17.7 in our zone and 14.2% in the county.

Overall hospital bed utilization statewide is at 81% overall and 82.5% for ICU beads. Our safe start zone is at 78.5% for all beds, and 77.0% for the I-C-U—down for regular beds and up for the I-C-U.  Meantime, COVID-19 occupancy rates continue to run at higher rates: Statewide it is 17.8% for all beds and 24.9% for I-C-U beds. Locally, Munson in Charlevoix has two COVID-19 patients and McLaren in Petoskey has 17, with 12 in their I-C-U. Those numbers all steady.

At the health Center, no new tests.  No tests pending. Last positive tests were on the 7th.  There have been three positive tests since the current island cases began. Positive rate is 11.5%.
