From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Weekend Community Calendar for Friday, October 4th, 2019.
First some news…
Governor Gretchen Whitmere’s decision to cut funding to a swath of rural schools in Michigan has folks on the island and beyond scratching their heads. Beaver Island Community School Principal and Superintendent Wil Cwikiel has some thoughts on what is going on.

Whitmere says the budget she got was a mess and that she used her line item veto to protect important programs—like education. On the island, the move will cut $155,000 from the school’s budget—nearly 8%. Other districts lost a quarter of their funding. You can learn more about the impacts of the cuts and how you can respond if the action concerns you by listening to yesterday’s edition of Beaver Island Perspectives. Wil was our guest for the show. You can listen to it on the W-V-B-I podcast page,
