Weekend Community Calendar for Friday, May 3rd, 2019

TIME: 19:00:00 From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Weekend Community Calendar for Friday, May 3rd, 2019. I’m Kevin Boyle.
We’ll get to a run-down on what’s happening on the island this weekend after an update on the ferry situation. Here’s the scoop. The ferry got stuck across after her morning run when the draw bridge in Charlevoix got stuck closing after the Emerald Isle passed through. It was stuck partially closed—with road traffic blocked from about 10:30 this morning until 2. The bridge operators finally got it closed by releasing the brakes on the bridge and driving a heavy truck out on it. But, apparently they’ve not been able to get the bridge to open. There is some sort of wiring or control issue that causes fuses to blow whenever they try. We spoke to BIBCo G-M Tim McQueer about the boat company’s plans in light of this. He says they will try to make a passenger run up until 6—so about now—and after that they mau wait a few more hours to send the crew and freight if the bridge starts working. Otherwise they’ll have to wait for the morning.
The delay resulted in a postponement of the funeral mass that was scheduled today for Virginia Palmer. Father Siler says the current plan is to have that mass at 2 tomorrow after the funeral mass for Margaret Evans, which is set for noon. So, the schedule is this. The Evans family will be at Holy Cross at 11 to receive friends and Margaret’s funeral mass will be at noon as planned followed by internment. Then, Virginia Palmer’s family will be at Holy Cross to receive friends at 1 with the funeral mass at 2 followed by her internment. Then, there’ll be a combined luncheon at Holy Cross Hall.
So, as usual on the island, we soldier on.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday…
Here’s a thought for the day from Niccolò Machiavelli, who was born on this date in 1469: “Wisdom consists of knowing how to distinguish the nature of trouble, and in choosing the lesser evil.”
On a lighter note…
What do politics and maple syrup have in common? They are both sticky subjects.
SFX: Wah, wah, wah….
That’s the W-V-B-I Weekend Community Calendar for Friday, May 3rd, 2019.
I’m Kevin Boyle at the pest free Hogarth Pest Control Studios of the Voice of Beaver Island wishing you a great day and asking you: why not make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening.
