A dispute continues to brew in Harbor Springs on an update to the zoning code there. It started over two years ago when the planning commission proposed reducing the number of zoning districts from 17 to nine and allowing accessory dwelling units. After a public hearing this spring, the city council adopted the new ordinance despite opposition from many residents. Now, a citizens’ group, “We Love Harbor Springs,” is filing a referendum to repeal the ordinance, aiming for more discussion on issues like the central business district and affordable housing. The group needs 302 signatures to get the referendum on the ballot. More details on the issues are at we love harbor springs dot org. Over in Charlevoix, the 94th annual Charlevoix Venetian Festival starts tomorrow and runs through the week. On this day in 1545 Henry VIII’s ‘Mary Rose’ sinks while fighting the French. The 800-ton Mary Rose, has given more than three decades of service to king and country when she is sunk in battle just off the Isle of Wight. The ship will be painstakingly raised from the deep and reconstructed as a breathtaking Tudor time capsule 437 years later. Illustration from Bing. |
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is nonplus (verb) [nahn-PLUS]. To nonplus someone is to perplex them, or in other words, to cause them to be at a loss as to what to say, think, or do. Does nonplus perplex you? You aren’t alone. Some people believe the non in nonplus means “not,” and assume that to be nonplussed is to be calm and poised, but in fact the opposite is true. The word’s history may clarify things. In Latin, non plus means “no more.” When nonplus debuted in English in the 16th century, it was used as a noun synonymous with quandary. Someone brought to a nonplus had reached an impasse in an argument and could say no more. In short time, people began applying nonplus as a verb, and today it is often used in participial form with the meaning “perplexed” (as in “Kevin’s strange remark left us utterly nonplussed”). |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Emperor Nero who, in fact, did not fiddle as Rome burned on this date in the year 64: “Hidden talent counts for nothing.” On a lighter note: Did you know that in ancient Rome there were four kinds of poisons. The first of the three would kill you. But the fourth type would just make you itchy. |
