NEWS

Yesterday, while flying back to Beaver Island Paul Welke, and Ben Delamater, along with paramedic Joe Moore, saw smoke and fire and quickly reported it. Thanks to that flight, the home of Jeff Stewart and Rita Palmer was saved albeit a few burned spots AND all pets are safe. Very special thanks to Island Airways, Beaver Island Fire Department, and Beaver Island EMS! Thanks to Phyllis Moore for reporting.

Island News From The United Kingdom

Here is a nice note and link from the DNR’s Al Stewart about a Beaver Island story published in the United Kingdom.

Beaver Island Community School has formed a team to compete in the First Robotics Challenge. They’ll learn this year’s challenge on January 9th and then spend January through March building a robot to compete against other schools in trying to beat the challenge. The team is still looking for folks that can help as mentors with all aspects of building the robot—from design, to mechanical to programming and everything in between. If you’d like to join the fun, send an email to me, as it happens, to me (I’m one of the coaches) at kevin.boyle@wvbi.net. If you’d like to learn more about the competition, checkout the Michigan FRC website at firstmichigan dot org.

Word of the day: unputdownable (uhn-poo t-DOU-nuh-buh l) which means so interesting or suspenseful as to compel reading. Unputdownable, as a term used to describe books, entered English in the 1930s. However, earlier senses based on the verb phrase put down meaning “criticize” or “suppress” appeared in English as early as the mid-1800s.
