Beaver Island Community Players and Radio Players

Scripts are available for the upcoming stage play auditions. The play is called the Boarding House and is available to check out at the Beaver Island District Library. Auditions will be in March with a production date of Memorial Weekend. Open to all interested folks.

We are in need of 3 men and a woman or two to make the cast of The Boarding House. If you are interested, check out the script at the library and read through it.

Auditions (sorta) will be next week (probably) and the show will be performed on Memorial Weekend.

The men roles:

Mr. Richards, a writer who likes to act out his death scenes.

Dirk Shadow: a young man, a little crazy, searching for pirate treasure

Dr. Sni Fell: a retired Dr. who keeps busy calling on the folks living at the Boarding House.

If you ever wanted to try acting, or have done so before, feel free to join us. Food is involved in the rehearsals, if that makes a difference!

In cooperation with the Media Lab at the Beaver Island Community School we are pleased to present new episodes of the Student Writer’s Almanac. Tune in on weekdays just after the news at 8:00 a.m., noon, 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and midnight to hear the latest literary work from students, present and past, at the island’s schools.

If you are looking for information on when and where to see the latest episode of the Boonies you can find that and information on all island events on the new WVBI Community Calendar. Just head on over to the WVBI website and click on Calendar on the top menu.

We’ve tried to include everything, but if we’ve missed your event you can easily add it yourself by using the handy “Post Your Event” button in the upper right of the calendar or by sending an email with the details to calendar@wvbi.net. And, we can make it easy for your events to show up in a nice calendar on your website, too, so you only have to post them once. Your website can show only your events or those plus other categories from the calendar that you choose. What a deal! Email us or call for details.

Oh, and where to find the Boonies? It’s on Tuesdays at 9:00 on the National Geographic Channel (DirectTV Channel 256, Dish Channel 186).

On this date of March 8, 1894 – A dog license law was enacted in the state of New York. It was the first animal control law in the U.S.

Did you know that sheep, goats, and octopuses pupils are rectangular? The reason these animals have rectangular pupils is because this is what helps them avoid predators.

Rectangular pupils tend to get very narrow during day time, which gives animals a greater accuracy of depth perception in their peripheral vision. Traditionally seen as prey, thanks to their eyes these animals are able to avoid predators.

Word of the day: isonomy (ahy-SON-uh-mee) which means equality of political rights. Isonomy derives from the Greek terms ísos meaning “equal” and nómos meaning “law.” It entered English around 1600.
