Current Events Update for April 18, 2016

Today is Monday, April 18th, 2016. I’m Greg Doig with today’s WVBI Community Calendar.

Congratulations to the First Robotics Competition team from BICS – BIROBOT (

The team has qualified to attend the FRC World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri, after ending our first Michigan season ranked 46 out of more than 400 teams in the state.

The State Championship event was an arduous 3 and a half day event. Sleep was short but excitement was long. The team finished with a 6 and 6 record for the event. They were in the top half of all teams and had fortune smiled kinder in a few matches, they would have been in the playoff rounds. Regardless, the accomplishments this rookie team, and considering it’s size, has exceeded all expectations. They have won many fans from the events they have been in, to date. More will follow. Many visitors attended from Beaver Island and others from around Michigan and Illinois. The team loved the support and well deserved recognition. They thank all that attended and all the great support they have received.

Help support the team by joining all the cool kids that have already bought a birobot t-shirt at You can also find information and sponsorship at the website. Go Islanders and Go BIROBOT – It’s in the Bucket!

COOTIES is a horror comedy with unexpected laughs and unapologetic thrills. When a cafeteria food virus turns elementary school children into killer zombies, a group of misfit teachers must band together to escape the playground carnage. The film stars Elijah Wood (The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings), Rainn Wilson (“The Office”), and Alison Pill (“The Newsroom”) as teachers who fight to survive the mayhem while hilariously bickering in an uncomfortable love triangle on the worst Monday of their lives. On this date of April 18, 1775 – American revolutionaries Paul Revere, William Dawes and Samuel Prescott rode though the towns of Massachusetts giving the warning that the Regulars were coming out. Later, the phrase “the British are coming” was attributed to Revere even though it is unlikely he used that wording.

Did you know that Peru has more pyramids than Egypt?

Word of the day: pecuniary (pi-KYOO-nee-er-ee) which means of or relating to money. Pecuniary can be traced to the Latin term pecūnia meaning “property, money” with the root pecū meaning “flock; farm animals.” It entered English in the late 1400s.
