Today is Thursday June 17th, 2016, and a gorgeous day it is here on the shores of Paradise Bay. Nothing but clear skies out there now and a balmy 60 degrees. I’m Kevin Boyle at WVBI. A full forecast and the WVBI Community Calendar Report are coming up after this global news update from FSN.

NEWS

I’m Kevin Boyle with your WVBI Community Calendar.

Tomorrow is the day for Sarah Avery, Emily Burton and Zack Bousquet.  It’s graduation at the Beaver island Community School. Lots of folks in town for the event tomorrow morning

Southbound drivers on U.S. 31 coming through Charlevoix will see a major detour beginning Monday, June 13.

The road closure is part of the Charlevoix infrastructure project that is currently taking place on St. Marys Drive.

“This will be a complete closure of the southbound lanes compared to the lane shifts we did for Wood and Green streets,” said Department of Public Works superintendent Pat Elliott.

Motorists are also reminded that State Street remains closed between Upright and Carpenter streets, to complete water main re-construction.

The lane closures will allow construction crews to connect the sanitary sewer lines on St. Marys Drive to the line under U.S. 31, which is nearly under the centerline, Elliott said.

“The sewer line is farther out under the roadway than the previous connections crews made with Grant and Wood streets,” Elliott said.

The detour will divert U.S. 31 southbound traffic onto Garfield Avenue to Grant Street. From Grant Street, motorists will travel to Carpenter Street and follow that street east back to U.S. 31, Elliott said.

The construction also will affect the northbound traffic on U.S. 31. From Carpenter Street to Garfield Avenue, motorists traveling north on the roadway will be shifted from two lanes to a single lane.

The lane closures and traffic diversion is expected to last until Friday, June 17.

City officials want motorists to know they are doing what they can to limit the impact on travel.

“We have worked with construction crews to have this portion of the project done at once to limit the impact on motorists,” said city manager Mark Heydlauff. “The goal is to have the lanes open by the weekend. Once this portion of the project is complete we are pretty close to finishing the work on those streets.”

There’s been some discussion on the Forum about some goop in the water. As is his habit, the Beaver Island Pirate spun some yarn on what might be causing it attributing it to the return of whales to the great lakes.  But, it’s just pollen according to reports.

BICS GRADUATION & CELEBRATIONS

Our lead story today is about commencement.  That’s right, graduation day is here for Sarah Avery, Emily Burton and Zack Bousquet. I’m sure they are thinking “finally” and I know their folks are thinking how did that happen so quickly.  Lots of folks are on the island for graduation celebrations for Sarah, Emily and Zac as well as for other graduates on the island including Jordan Marsh from the Beaver Island Light House School and my son Ryan Boyle from the Interlochen Arts Academy. Congratulations to all of them.  Our community wishes you well as you head off to what’s next, and we warmly welcome all those here to celebrate your accomplishments so far.

AWESOME DISTRACTION

Also coming up at the BIC Center on June 25th at eight P-M, it’s Awesome Distraction, a budding young group from Northern Michigan that is impressing audiences with their wonderful harmonies and versatile musicianship. Currently releasing their 4th CD, this sweet singing group infuses guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, violin and cajon into their repertoire, which includes lots of original material and an acapella gospel medley.  It’s going to be another great summer music event live here on the BIC Center Stage.

AT THE LIBRARY

Over at the Library, for kids and adults, on June 21, Dan McDonough will be offering a Manga/Anime drawing workshop at 2 p.m. It’s FREE and Materials will be available at the library, but if you would like to bring your own, Dan suggests colored pencils and a straight edge.

TRAIL FUN

As part of Beaver Island’s trails initiative, the Human Services Commission and islanders are teaming up with Leadership Charlevoix and United Way to develop a trail designated to preschoolers. These trails support early education strategies to ensure all children start school ready to succeed— meaning all children start kindergarten on track in the five key developmental areas of communication, cognition, physical development, social/emotional development, and self-help skills.

Each Born Learning Trail captures 10 fun outdoor games on engaging signs to help parents and caregivers create learning opportunities for young children. Signs will be installed at the Beaver Island Community School, library, and the Jewel Gillespie playground. Born Learning Trails can be a valuable community resource for early learning for visitors or year round residents. Experiencing the Born Learning Trails together is a wonderful learning activity for both parent and child. The trail builds on the child’s curiosity and confidence, and reinforces the learning already underway. The signs have been ordered and their anticipated delivery date is mid-July. Volunteers will be asked this summer to help erect signs and stencil age appropriate activities on the cement. If interested in volunteering, contact Larissa McGinnity (448-2125) or Pam Grassmick (448-2314).

RUMOR CONTROL

In Rumor Control news …

There’s been some discussion on the Forum about some goop in the water. As is his habit, the Beaver Island Pirate spun some yarn on what might be causing it attributing it to the return of whales to the great lakes.  But, it’s just pollen according to reports.

On this date of June 17, 1885 – The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City aboard the French ship Isere.

Did you know that tarantula spiders can survive 2 and a half years without food?  I did not know that.  I also didn’t know that in the desert southwest of the US—and maybe elsewhere—there are bugs called Tarantula Vultures that attack Tarantulas by laying their eggs in them.  The young feed off the Tarantula and things don’t go well for the spider when they hatch.  Or so I was told on our recent visit to Arizona.

Word of the day: alliaceous (al-ee-EY-shuh s) which means 1) having the odor or taste of garlic, onion, etc. 2) belonging to the genus Allium (formerly the family Alliaceae). Alliaceous stems from the Latin allium meaning “garlic.” It entered English in the mid-1700s.

BIRTHDAYS

On our birthday calendar today—none—but if it’s your birthday all of us here at WVBI and the BIC Center wish you a happy one. And if we are missing your birthday, you can add it to the calendar by sending an email to birthdays at wvbi dot net.

TRAFFIC

In Traffic news, if you are headed to the mainland, watch out for delays headed south out of Charlevoix on US 31.  Right after you come up the hill out of downtown there’s a detour through the neighborhood almost to the airport—so that’ll slow you down over there.

But, here on the island, we are still happily waiting for any delay to report.  Drive times to both island airports are normal and thanks to our hard working Charlevoix County road crew, all of the roads are in great shape—smooth as a baby’s bottom. But, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

CLOSE

Finally, here’s a list of graduation advice we came across:

  1. Put the alarm clock in the bathroom. (And keep the door open).

  1. Do one thing at a time. Give each experience all your attention.

  1. Spend more time listening.

  1. Make yourself clear.

  1. You educate yourself.

  1. Learn to draw. Or to play the cello. Or to tap dance.

  1. Keep a journal.

  1. You will be more like your parents than you imagine.

So, to Lucas, all our graduation ceremony visitors and especially to you—have a great day.

That’s the WVBI Community Calendar for Fridayday June 17th, 2016. I’m Kevin Boyle.
