News Update

Community Calendar Report for Tuesday, May 6th, 2025

If you have air travel planned other than to and from the island, remember that tomorrow is the Real ID deadline. Starting tomorrow, the TSA will require a Real ID or other approved ID to clear airport security. If your Michigan license has a star in a gold circle or a star in a Michigan outline in the upper right corner, you’re good to go. Don’t see a star? Check if you have an enhanced license — those are also Real ID compliant, even without the star. If you don’t have either, you can still fly using a passport, passport card, permanent resident card, or other TSA-approved ID — but without one, you could face delays, extra screening, or be turned away.

State officials unveiled a plan last Thursday to train up to 5,000 new infrastructure workers by 2030. The Michigan Statewide Infrastructure Workforce Plan aims to expand apprenticeships, remove barriers for underrepresented groups, and build K–12 career pathways. Labor officials say the plan is urgent as many skilled trades workers approach retirement. The announcement came during Michigan Construction Career Days in Howell.

Beekeepers have been placing hives across the region to pollinate budding cherry trees, a key step to ensuring a healthy fruit crop. Why are the hives going out before the blooms you might ask? The bees need time to acclimate before blossoms open, so they go in early even though the weather can be wet and cool like it was last week.

Ands speaking of warmer weather, M-Live forecasters are starting to hint of a warm Memorial Day weekend ahead. They say a rare “Omega Block” weather pattern is setting up early over the U.S., splitting northern Michigan between lingering clouds to the southeast and drier, milder air to the northwest. Since this slow-moving pattern usually appears closer to Memorial Day, the forecasters say summer weather may arrive early. If so, that means by mid-May we could see a shift toward warmer-than-normal temps across northwest Lower Michigan, with highs possibly reaching the 70s and 80s heading into the holiday weekend.

Now, here’s a look at events happening on your Emerald Isle…

TRAFFIC: The W-V-B-I virtual octocopter is flying high in the Island skies and spies…no traffic.  But, cleanup work continues down-island.  So, watch out for the road crews and let’s be careful out there.

On this day in 1937 A transatlantic flight of the German luxury passenger airship Hindenburg ends in disaster as the vessel bursts into flames near its docking tower at Lakehurst, New Jersey. Thirty-six people will die in the tragedy, and it will mark the end of airship travel.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is

Exculpate (verb) [EK-skull-payt],  which means to prove that someone is not guilty of doing something wrong. Today’s word is most often encountered in formal writing in reference to the clearing of someone of alleged fault or guilt, as in “they were exculpated of any wrongdoing.” You may be more familiar with a pair of terms that, like exculpate, come from the Latin noun culpa, meaning “blame” or “guilt.” One is the adjective culpable, used to describe someone deserving of condemnation or blame. The other is the Latin phrase mea culpa, which translates directly as “through my fault” and refers to an acknowledgement of personal fault or error that is more formal than, for example, “my bad.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday

Here’s a thought for the day from musician Bob Seger, who was born on this day in 1945: “Mediocrity’s easy, the good things take time, the great need commitment.”

On a lighter note…

Did you hear that they upgraded the lighting system on the Goodyear blimp? Now they call it the LED zeppelin.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Tuesday, May 6th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
