Community Calendar Report for Tuesday, July 1st, 2025

The battle over Line five under the straits is headed to the nation’s highest court. The Supreme Court said yesterday that it will decide whether a legal battle over the Line 5 oil pipeline stays in Michigan court or shifts to federal judges. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel first sued to shut down part of Line 5 back in 2019, citing state environmental laws. Enbridge, the Canadian pipeline operator, moved the case to federal court well past the usual 30-day window. A lower court allowed it, but the Sixth Circuit reversed, sending the case back to Ingham County. Enbridge argues federal treaties and conflicting appeals court rulings justify Supreme Court review. The state says the case belongs in Michigan, to protect the Great Lakes from a Line 5 rupture. Meanwhile, Enbridge continues seeking permits for a tunnel to house a replacement pipeline beneath the Straits of Mackinac.

Meantime, a group called Michiganders for Money Out of Politics wants voters to ban political donations by monopoly utilities like DTE and Consumers, plus big state contractors. They’ve launched a petition drive aiming for the 2026 ballot. The coalition says it’s time to limit corporate influence and protect the Great Lakes from costly decisions driven by special interests. Utilities argue they’re transparent and oppose the plan. Organizers hope to finalize ballot language by July.

Up north, Charlevoix’s Argonne House restaurant is turning 100 this summer. Opened in 1925 as the Thorman Country Club, its rich history includes dance nights, shipwreck tales, and visits from beauty queens. The Charlevoix Historical Society will share its story in  programs at the Train Depot on July 15, and on August 9 the current owners will celebrate the centennial at the Argonne with dinner, dancing, and live music.

A recent Island visitor is in search of a ring she lost here.  No great value other than sentimental.  It’s silver with waves on it possibly lost on Mt. Pisgah, the beach at Donegal Bay or by the shoe tree. There’s a picture of something similar in today’s script. Reply to her post on the Forum if you find it.

NAME OF DAY: The BIC Center Name of the Day is Lizzie.  If that’s your name, come on in to the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: Jared Robert, Kelly Collins, Larry Roy and Nick DeLaat are on our list today. Happy Birthday to Kelly, Nick, Larry and Jared and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays.  Still, let’s be careful out there…especially around the school zone

On this day in 1863 The twenty-fourth Michigan Infantry regiment of the Iron Brigade engages advancing Confederate forces in Pennsylvania. Among those in the battle is Gilbert A. Dickey, one of the seven students of the Michigan Agricultural College who received special exemptions to depart the University early to begin training as Army engineers. In savage fighting, the twenty-fourth will suffer 73 percent casualties (363 of 496 men including Gilbert Dickey) …on the first day of the three-day Battle of Gettysburg.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is verbose (adjective) [ver-BOHSS], which describes someone who tends to use many words to convey their point. Verbose can also describe something, such as a speech, that contains more words than necessary.

Verbose comes from the Latin adjective verbōsus, from verbum, meaning “word.” Perhaps to prove the point, here’s a rundown of other words to describe wordiness in English. Diffuselong-windedprolixredundantwindyrepetitive
rambling, and circumlocutory. More than enough said.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday, July 1st …

Here’s a thought for the day from Dan Aykroyd, who was born on this day in 1952: “We must come to the point where we realize the concept of race is a false one. There is only one race, the human race.”

On a lighter note…

What do you call a parade where everyone wears masks? A mask-arade.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Tuesday, July 1st, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
