News Update

Community Calendar Report for Thursday, Patriot Day, September 11th, 2025

Longtime Charlevoix G-O-P leader John Haggard has passed away. He died hours after celebrating his 58th wedding anniversary and a judge’s dismissal of eight felony counts against him and 14 others in Michigan’s “false electors” case. He was 84. Senate Minority leader Aric Nesbitt said that Haggard’s last days should have been spent with family and friends, not in a courtroom. He called A-G Dana Nessel’s case against him a witch hunt and an abuse of the legal system. Nessel is reportedly considering an appeal of the dismissal.

The Petoskey City Council held a special meeting on Tuesday to look at the issue of homelessness in Northern Michigan. They heard from a range of homeless-service providers who noted rising demand, current shelter limits and expansion plans. The briefing follows the council’s May vote to ban camping on city property. There’s extensive coverage of the meeting in the Petoskey News Review in an article by Karly Graham linked in today’s script.

In Charlevoix, the Circle of Arts opens a new exhibition called Big and Small tomorrow. The show runs through October 25 during regular gallery hours and features work from 22 artists exploring the idea of scale — with paintings, sculptures, and mixed media both large and small. The opening reception with the artists is set for tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

In T-C, East Bay Township is moving toward a Corridor Improvement Authority for the US-31 Beach District. Trustees plan an October 13 vote on boundaries and a board. The CIA would capture rising property values—not raise taxes—to fund sidewalks, safer crossings, streetscaping, and a bay pier.

Michigan’s D-N-R is looking for input on its Wildlife Action Plan— a 10-year roadmap required for federal funding. It targets rare species like piping plover, Kirtland’s warbler, and lake sturgeon. Review the draft and comment at the DNR website by tomorrow. There’s a link in today’s script online.

Monday, in our dark skies, Aquila the Eagle is home to the star Altair, which is one of the corners of the Summer Triangle. The best time to see Aquila is in the evening sky through November as it soars along the Milky Way. BIRTHDAYS: Judi Meister and Dustin Crandall are on our list today. Happy Birthday to Judy and Dustin, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But, let’s be careful out there—especially in the school zone.

On this date in 2001, four passenger jets are hijacked in a terrorist suicide plot, with two planes slamming into New York’s World Trade Center twin towers, one hitting the Pentagon outside Washington, DC, and another crashing in Pennsylvania. The death toll from the worst terrorist attack on American soil will reach nearly 3,000.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is zoomorphic (adjective) [zoh-uh-MOR-fik], an adjective that describes things that have the form of an animal. The first-known use of zoomorphic in English is a translation of the French word zoomorphique [zoh-oh-mor-FEEK], used in a mid-19th century book on paleography to describe an ornately designed Greek letter in a manuscript from the Middle Ages. The “zoo” in French zoomorphique (zoh-oh-mor-FEEK) comes from the Greek zôion (ZOH-ee-on, “animal”), and morphique from morphē (mor-FAY, “form”). Translating zoomorphique to zoomorphic made sense, given the similarly built anthropomorphic (meaning “having human form”), which appeared about half a century earlier.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday

Here’s a thought for the day from President George Bush: “…for those of us who lived through these events, the only marker we’ll ever need is the tick of a clock at the 46th minute of the eighth hour of the 11th day.”

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Thursday, September 11th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
