Community Calendar Report For Thursday, October 30, 2025

Community Calendar Report for Thursday, October 30th, 2025.

First, some news…

New roundabout opened in Traverse City

A new two-lane roundabout at the intersection of M-72 and M-22 in Traverse City officially opened to traffic on October 27.

Final paving was completed on the $25.8 million project, which began in March.

Some smaller tasks, including the installation of pedestrian-activated crosswalk signals, are expected to be finished by November 15.

Northern Michigan residents may face food insecurity as federal food benefits are set to expire on November 1 due to the ongoing government shutdown. The Supplemental Food Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is not providing benefits, leading to a significant increase in demand for services at food pantries in the region, such as the Father Fred Foundation in Traverse City.

As you make final plans for Halloween costumes, those headed out to trick or treat will want to note it will be a chilly evening and a little breezy.  That’s according to the Gaylord National Weather Service office. There might be some drizzle, too, but no snow.

The C-O-A has special take-away hot roast beef meal planned for Island vets. It will be delivered to the municipal airport on November 7th. Sign up with a call to Dawn at 2124.

NAME OF DAY: The BIC Center Name of the Day is Jay.  If that’s your name, come on into the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: Izzabella DeLaat, Katie Johnson, Peterson Haak, Kenny Gilfillan and Hank Doig are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Izzabella, Katie, Peterson, Kenny and Hank  and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But, let’s be careful out there—especially in the school zone.

On this date in 1938 Orson Welles’ realistic radio dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth—is broadcast on the radio.

Welles was only 23 years old when his Mercury Theater company decided to update H.G. Wells’ 19th-century science fiction novel The War of the Worlds for national radio. Despite his age, Welles had been in radio for several years, most notably as the voice of “The Shadow” in the hit mystery program of the same name. “War of the Worlds” was not planned as a radio hoax, and Welles had little idea of how legendary it would eventually become.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is Truculent describes a person who is easily annoyed and eager to argue or fight. It can also describe the mood or attitude of such a person.

// The approach of multiple deadlines had put me in a truculent mood, and I could tell my colleagues were avoiding me.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Orson Welles, When people accept breaking the law as normal, something happens to the whole society.

On a lighter note…Believe in yourself even when no one else will. Which some believe this was written by Sasquatch aka Big Foot

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Thursday, October 30th, 2025. I’m Greg Doig reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
