The Beaver Island Association in collaboration with the Joint Telecommunications Advisory Committee has announced a Community Forum on Broadband for the 12th. That’s next Thursday. B-I-A vice-president Dick Mulvihill says that there are plenty of broadband developments to discuss. He says it is really important for Islanders to understand that the P-F-N under lake fiber project will not by itself bring fiber service to island homes and business. “We are a waypoint for PFN,” he says. But, the plan is to use that fiber to support Island fiber service. Mulvihill says that the B-I-A has received a Rural Readiness Grant from the state that will help make $50,000 available to develop a plan for a community owned fiber system on the Island. And here’s good news: the all in cost for users could be less than that now paid for internet service from either T-D-S or Starlink. The Forum gets underway next Thursday at 5:30 in the theater at the BIC Center. Over in Charlevoix, city leaders say they won’t organize a deer cull or pursue new fencing rules, despite renewed complaints about deer. Officials say property owners can allow archery hunting on private land under state rules. A new ordinance made that legal last year, but this fall will be the first full season under it. Down in Lansing, a Republican lawmaker has introduced articles of impeachment against Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. Representative Jim DeSana accuses Benson of overstepping her authority and mishandling elections. Benson fired back, calling it a political stunt and warning it could jeopardize election security. And on the Island, we continue to see smoke from the wildfires up in Canada. The M-Live weather gurus say smoke is likely to be visible across the state today, with especially strong concentrations over Lake Michigan including the Island. The smoke should clear some tomorrow and even more over the weekend, but they say as the wildfire continues to burn up north we are likely to have occasional smokey days for a good part of the summer. That haze makes for some great sunset views and, with lilacs out in full bloom on the Island, sharing beautiful views and fragrance, the BIC Center’s Rob Cole caught a great photo of them last evening over at Barney’s Lake. Check out today’s script to see it.

On this day in 1968, Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy is shot three times as he departs the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after giving a victory speech following his California Democratic Primary win. He will die the next day from his wounds, almost five years after his brother John was assassinated.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is sea change (noun) [SEE-CHAYNJ], which refers to a big and sudden change or transformation. In Shakespeare’s The Tempest, sea change refers to a change brought about by the sea: the sprite Ariel, who aims to make Ferdinand believe that his father the king has perished in a shipwreck, sings within earshot of the prince, “Full fathom five thy father lies…; / Nothing of him that doth fade / But doth suffer a sea-change / into something rich and strange.” This is the original, now-archaic meaning of sea change. Today the term is used for a distinctive change or transformation, though even after sea change gained this figurative meaning, writers continued to allude to Shakespeare’s literal one. But now, in a bit of its own sea change, a sea change is just as likely to be undergone or experienced. |
