WVBI Community Calendar Report

September 8, 2025

From our Langford Family Studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the W-V-B-I.

First some news…

The Irish Feile drew full house crowds who enjoyed music and cultural events despite weather that disrupted travel and made for multiple schedule switch-ups. The boat cancellation on Friday plus occasional rain and gusty winds made for ongoing challenges that the Feile team handled with aplomb. Today’s online script includes some photos from the weekend.

Over in Charlevoix, work begins this week on the South Pier Lighthouse rehabilitation. Crews will repair and repaint both the inside and outside of the historic light. Work begins the second week of September and could last until mid-October. Because it involves scaffolding, lead abatement, and blasting, the area around the lighthouse will be closed, and the public is asked to stay clear. The project is supported by state and local grants.

In Lansing, Michigan’s House Democratic leader says he doubts a budget deal will be reached before the October 1 deadline, warning of a partial shutdown. Ranjeev Puri blames Speaker Matt Hall’s leadership, while Hall counters that Puri offers no solutions. Lawmakers face less than a month to finalize the state budget.

A new report from the Citizens Utility Board says Michigan had the longest power outages in the nation last year, with reliability worse than 2022. The watchdog blames poor performance by DTE and Consumers Energy, though both utilities point to severe storms. They say new investments in smart grid devices, tree trimming, and upgraded substations are improving service. State regulators agree weather plays a role but say utilities must do more—and have ordered audits, set performance benchmarks, and are weighing penalties for poor results.

Back on the Island, if you are looking to do some hunting this fall, The Beaver Island Wildlife Club and DNR will host a Hunter Safety Field Day on September 28th. Participants must first complete the online course at Michigan dot gov slash D-N-R, then let Levi Connor know to be included. Both the online course and field day are required for a hunting license if you’ve never been licensed before. Open to kids and adults.

Looking ahead to highlights for next week…

NAME OF DAY: The BIC Center Name of the Day is Cyndi.  If that’s your name, come on into the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: Katelyn Martin, Brock Rosema, Cheri Imscher and Faletta Duffing are on our list today. Happy Birthday to Faletta, Cheri, Katelyn and Brock, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But it is very busy in town when the ferry arrives, main street will be closed from the print shop to the hall this afternoon and evening as well as tomorrow, and the Feile will have lots of visitors exploring the island. So, let’s be careful out there.

On this date in 1760, the last governor of New France, finally capitulates to the English in Montreal. The move ended most of the active fighting in the French and Indian War in North America. Since news was slow reaching the frontier, Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit remained in French hands until November 29, 1760. Fort Michilimackinac and other forts would be turned over later as news of the new world order was received. Also on this date in 1966, a new show goes boldly where no show has gone before. Gene Roddenberry pitched his story of 23rd-century interstellar exploration as a sort of outer space Western, and tonight ‘Star Trek’ makes its TV debut. The series will be cancelled just three seasons in, but reruns in syndication prove that the show will live long and prosper.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is sanguine (adjective) [SANG-gwin] a formal word that today almost always describes someone who is confident and hopeful, or something that shows confidence and hopefulness. Sanguine can also describe something that is bloodred in color, something involving or relating to bloodshed, or a person’s reddish complexion, which tells us a lot about its origin. Sanguine traces back to the Latin noun sanguis, meaning “blood.” So how did it also come to mean “hopeful”? In medieval times, people believed your health and mood depended on four body fluids, or humors. If sanguis was dominant, you were thought to be strong, confident, and rosy-cheeked. That’s how sanguine came to mean not just “bloodred,” but also cheerful and hopeful.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday

Here’s a thought for the day from Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry: “The strength of a civilization is not measured by its ability to fight wars, but rather by its ability to prevent them.”

Did you hear about the Sci-Fi fan who confused Star Wars with Star Trek.

It was a Wookie mistake.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Monday, September 8th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
