Michigan’s dam safety overhaul is one vote from Governor Whitmer’s desk after Senate action last Thursday. The bills would strengthen flood standards, increase inspections and require owners to prove they can maintain their dams. The House must approve a final change by the Senate before the package goes to the Governor. The reforms follow years of delays since devastating mid-Michigan dam failures in 2020. #Environment
Bridge Michigan reports this morning that only about one in four Michigan high school juniors meets college-readiness benchmarks on the S-A-T. Bridge says that’s down from nearly 27 percent last year and 35 percent a decade ago. Math remains a particular challenge: just over a quarter meet that benchmark, compared with about half in reading and writing. But educators caution that one test doesn’t tell the whole story. Grayling High School Principal Sarah Allen told Bridge hard work and leadership also help prepare students for college. State officials point to gains in Advanced Placement testing and opportunities to earn college credit while still in high school. A listing of results shows Charlevoix Public Schools at just 39% and Petoskey at 44. The report did not include info for B-I-C-S. #Education
In Petoskey, unpaid parking tickets can now get your car booted. The city can now immobilize or tow vehicles with six or more unpaid violations totaling over a hundred dollars. A late-fee amnesty ended last month. #Traffic

On this date in 1975, Detroit dedicates a Michigan historical marker honoring Fannie M. Richards. The marker recognizes Richards as Detroit’s first Black public-school teacher and a leader in the fight against segregated schools. Her campaign helps bring an 1869 Michigan Supreme Court ruling ordering Detroit’s schools integrated—85 years before Brown versus Board of Education.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is perseverate [per-SEV-uh-rayt]. To perseverate means to focus intently on a thought—or to repeat something continually. The verb comes from perseveration, a psychology term adopted from German in the early 1900s. If you keep replaying an old mistake, you may be perseverating. |

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from President Dwight D. Eisenhauer: “Un-American activity cannot be prevented or routed out by employing un-American methods; to preserve freedom we must use the tools that freedom provides.” |
|
And on a lighter note… Don’t Stop Be-Leafin’. |
