TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But it is very busy in town when the ferry arrives, and the warm weather means lots of folks at the public beach plus hikers and bikers everywhere. Plus, baby turtles are busy crossing. So, let’s be careful out there. |

On this day in 1861 the First Michigan Infantry Regiment loses six men in the first major land battle of the American Civil War. The First Battle of Bull Run happens in Manassas, about 30 miles outside Washington DC with the rebels on the defensive for most of the day. But they rally and break the Union right flank, sending the Federals into a chaotic retreat towards Washington. The Confederate victory gives the South a surge of confidence and shocked many in the North, who realize the war will not be won as easily as they had hoped. Also on this day in 1983, Scientists at the Vostok Research Station on the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, log the coldest temperature ever recorded at an inhabited location when the mercury falls to -128.6 F below zero. |

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is hubris (noun) [HYOO-bris] which means a great or foolish amount of pride or confidence. English picked up both the concept of hubris and the term for that particular brand of cockiness from the ancient Greeks, who considered hubris a dangerous character flaw capable of provoking the wrath of the gods. In classical Greek tragedy, hubris was often a fatal shortcoming that brought about the fall of the tragic hero. Typically, overconfidence led the hero to attempt to overstep the boundaries of human limitations and assume a godlike status; in response, the gods inevitably humbled the offender with a sharp reminder of human mortality. |

On a lighter note… Why did the chicken cross the playground? To get to the other slide. |
