Community Calendar Report For Monday, February 16, 2026

Community Calendar Report for Monday, February 16th, 2026.
First some news…
The Great Lakes Islands Alliance’s annual report highlights the challenges island communities faced in 2025 due to global and economic pressures. Despite these challenges, the report emphasizes the importance of cooperation and celebrating the unique aspects of island life. There is a link to the report in our show notes online https://glialliance.org/

from Lake Superior State University, reporting on the Islanders’ status at Northern Lights League Basketball Tournament: On the boys’ side, the Islanders defeated the Paradise Rockets in their first game on Friday morning with a decisive 43 to 25 win. The win took them into the next game against Mackinac Island. The boys played hard and came up short with the final score 56 to 35. The Lady Islanders dove into deep competition with the Mackinac Island Lakers in an intense rematch of the final Great Lakes Islands Tournament on Friday afternoon. Despite a strong second half and some amazing play, the Lakers edged the Islanders 66-56. Great play by all the Beaver Island athletes despite a season where all but one of their regular season games were cancelled due to weather. Special thanks to our Seniors! Go Islanders!

The Beaver Island Wildlife Club is hosting the annual Lake Genesereth Ice Fishing Tournament on Saturday, February 21st. The festivities start at “first light” at the Lake G. boat launch (bait provided) and lunch will be provided at noon (donations of food are welcome—if you want to make a dish to share, please contact Levi Connor). There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes for pike and bluegill with separate adult and kids categories (and everyone’s favorite—a special prize for the smallest pike!). Weigh-in is at 6:00 pm. Even if you don’t fish, come on out and enjoy the beauty of Lake G. in the winter!

America 250 Writing Challenge is a part of the NEA Big Read programming. We are challenging everyone to write on the topic of America 250- what it means to be an American, what America means to you, to the world…
Submissions will be compiled into a book format and offered for sale next summer.

On this date in 1923 in Thebes, Egypt, English archaeologist Howard Carter enters the sealed burial chamber of the ancient Egyptian ruler King Tutankhamen.
Because the ancient Egyptians saw their pharaohs as gods, they carefully preserved their bodies after death, burying them in elaborate tombs containing rich treasures to accompany the rulers into the afterlife. In the 19th century, archeologists from all over the world flocked to Egypt, where they uncovered a number of these tombs. Many had long ago been broken into by robbers and stripped of their riches.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday…
Here’s a thought for the day from ― Walt Whitman “Re-examine all you have been told. Dismiss what insults your soul.”
On a lighter note… did you know that a dog can bark up to 500 times a day, but, that’s just a ruff estimate
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Monday, February 16th, 2026. I’m Greg reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
