The Courier reports that Charlevoix County Sheriff Chuck Vondra is standing by his decision to hire former Charlevoix Police Chief Gerard Doan as the county’s new Animal Control Officer—despite Doan’s resignation in 2023 following a city investigation that found he engaged in repeated inappropriate conduct. Sheriff Vondra says Doan faced no criminal charges and was the best candidate for the job. However, county commissioners say they weren’t involved in the hiring process, despite bylaws requiring board approval. Doan will enforce animal welfare laws and undergo training for the role. On this day in 1763 England and France formally end the French and Indian War with the Treaty of Paris, which officially transfers Michigan from French to British rule. By that time, English troops had already overtaken French forts at Detroit, Michilimackinac and St. Joseph and begun the shift from fur trades and forestlands to agricultural settlements. Economic losses stemming from the war will help spark world-altering revolutions in both Britain and France. Also on this day in 1846, fleeing religious persecution that included the assassination of their leader, Joseph Smith, 1,600 members of what will become the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their new leader, Brigham Young, head west, where they will eventually settle in the Great Salt Lake Valley. Another group, lead by James Strang, eventually heads north to Beaver Island. Image from Michigan Day-byDay |
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is Vestige (noun) [VESS-tij], is a trace, mark, or visible sign left by something lost or vanished. Vestige traces back to the Latin noun vestigium, meaning “footstep, footprint, or track.” Like its forebear, vestige refers to a perceptible sign made by something that has passed, or to a tangible reminder, such as a fragment or remnant, of what is past and gone. Vestige also happens to be one of only a few vestiges of vestigium itself, along with the adjective vestigial (“remaining as the last part of something that existed before”) and the familiar verb investigate. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Brigham Young: “It is wise for us to forget our troubles, there are always new ones to replace them.” |
On a lighter note… What do you call an alligator that wears a vest? An investigator. |
