Community Calendar Report for Monday, August 17th, 2026

The Peaine Township Planning Commission is considering new outdoor lighting rules aimed at reducing glare and protecting dark skies. The proposal would limit new lights to 3,000 Kelvin, require most fixtures to direct light downward, set brightness limits and add protections along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Some unshielded and upward-pointing lights would be prohibited. A public meeting on the proposed amendments is tonight at 5:00 at Peaine Township Hall. There’s a link to the proposed ordinance in today’s script online.

FEMA says nearly five-million dollars in disaster aid has gone to homeowners and renters in northwest Lower Michigan following April’s historic flooding. More than 500 applications have been approved across the region, with Wexford County receiving 2.8-million dollars. FEMA grants can help with home repairs and temporary housing. The deadline to apply is August 31st.

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is distributing 1.66-million dollars to local governments and nonprofits this year, including 8-thousand dollars for St. James Township. The Island grant will pay for underground water tanks firefighters can use when the lake is frozen. The tribe’s two-percent casino allocations have provided nearly half-a-million dollars to Beaver Island since 1999, supporting emergency services, senior housing, education, the Community Center and other projects.

The new lens cover and cabinet for the freshly cleaned Fresnel lens at Beaver Head Lighthouse are now on display. Island resident Tony Gatliff built the case, along with the lighthouse’s custom wainscoting. There’s a phot in today’s script online.

Today’s BIC Center Name of the Day is Doris.  If that’s your name, come on down to the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

On our Birthday List: Marlene Wiser, Ryan Oliver, Riley Williamson, Margaux Legaspi and Mark Perron are celebrating today.  Happy Birthday to Margaux, Marlene, Mark, Riley and Ryan, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at the BIC Center and WVBI.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The Island Beltway is running smoothly. There are no bridge delays. But, it is busy in town when the ferries arrive and there are lots of folks out hiking and biking. So, let’s be careful out there.

On this date in 1945, Indonesian Nationalist leaders Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaim the new Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta, just two days after Japan announces its surrender in World War Two. The Netherlands does not accept independence, leading to four years of fighting and diplomacy. Dutch recognition of Indonesian sovereignty finally comes in 1949, but August 17th is still celebrated as Indonesia’s Independence Day.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is the adjective lackadaisical [lak-uh-DAY-zih-kul], which means lacking enthusiasm, energy or effort…carelessly lazy or halfhearted.

You might say, “The team’s lackadaisical approach to preparation showed when the project fell behind schedule.”

Lackadaisical grew out of the old expression “lackaday,” which was used to express regret or disappointment…something like saying “alas” or “what a shame.” By the 1700s, lackadaisical had developed to describe someone who seemed languid, listless or lacking in spirit.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Indonesian independence leader Sukarno: “Let us not be bitter about the past, but let us keep our eyes firmly on the future.”

On a lighter note
Our back-to-school jokes continue: Why did the pencil stink? Because it was a No. 2.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Monday, August 17th, 2026. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
