Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal Grand Rapids crash following an attempted ICE traffic stop Sunday. Homeland Security says Mario Coronado Juarez
was not the officers’ intended target, but fled at high speed before they ended the enforcement action. Officers found his burning car about a half-mile away and tried to help, but he died. Governor Whitmer ordered the investigation amid questions from local
officials and immigrant-rights activists about the crash.
A $100,000 bond has been set for a 28-year-old seasonal worker from Jamaica, charged after Wednesday’s crash on the Mackinac Bridge. He faces felony reckless driving causing serious impairment. State police say he rear-ended another vehicle near a construction zone after several drivers accelerated from the toll plaza. Four people were injured—two seriously—and the bridge was shut down for several hours. Investigators believe speed and alcohol were factors.

Continuing our look at what will be on your ballot in November, statewide Proposal Two is known as the “Money Out of Politics” proposal. It would restrict campaign contributions from regulated utilities, large government contractors and closely connected groups, while expanding disclosure rules for political communications. Supporters include Clean Water Action and Voters Not Politicians. Consumers Energy and Blue Cross Blue Shield oppose it. The Michigan Supreme Court rejected an attempt to remove Proposal Two from the ballot. Separately, the court kept what would have been Proposal 3—a proof-of-citizenship amendment—off the ballot.

In Lansing, Michigan lawmakers are moving closer to overhauling the state’s nearly 40-year-old dam safety law. The House voted 96-to-7 for legislation requiring annual inspections of high-hazard dams, engineering reviews every decade and long-term maintenance plans from owners. The changes follow the 2020 Edenville and Sanford dam failures, which caused about $175 million in damage. The package is not final: the amended bill and a companion measure still need Senate action.

In the U-P, a developer plans to invest $5 million redeveloping Westwood Mall near Marquette, where heavy snow collapsed part of the roof in February. W-L-U-C T-V reports that most of the mall would be demolished by year’s end for a new commercial building, while two stores away from the damaged area, Kohl’s and Dunham’s, remain.

Michigan’s fall color season is getting underway, with low-to-moderate color is spreading across most of the U.P., and with some change beginning in the northern Lower Peninsula. The forecast calls for peak color across much of the western U.P. by October 7, while northern Lower Michigan reaches moderate color. Most of the Lower Peninsula should reach high or peak color around October 23, with the Island just a week or so behind that.

Also, Friday evening at B-I-C-S, the Islander volleyball and soccer squads take on Mackinac Island in games starting at 5:00. And, at the Wild Strawberry, there’s an End of Summer Pizza Party. Their famous pizza back for one night only 4:00 to 7:00.

The 3:00 show is Toy Story 5. Woody, Buzz and the gang take on a electronic tablet in the latest from Pixar. It’s rated PG. Then at 6:00, It’s Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. Avatar Aang learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands. It’s rated PG-13. Saturday nights are Prime Rib Night at the Shamrock. And there’s Pickleball outside starting at 7:00 on the township courts.

At 7:00, take a trip back to the best of the 80s and 90s with the Mix Tape show (that’s a 120-minute TDK cassette tape for those in the know) hosted by WVBI’s Adam Pettigrew. Mark Beltaire takes over at 9:00 with Rockin’ the Boat and continues at 10:00 with the Blues Cruise. Cousin Dan wraps up the evening with the Too Good Radio Show starting at 11:00.]

Wednesday, there’s 10:30 there’s Chair Strength training at the BIC Center up in the Hangout. At 3:30, the Lego Club is on at the library. At 4:00 the Amik Cultural Preservation Center will be open. At 5:00, the C-M-U Biological Station holds its annual end of season Community Appreciation gathering. There’ll be drinks, dinner, games on the long and stories or a great summer on the island, some of them true.
Thursday, it’s History Day at B-I-C-S. Students will learn about the history of the Island through special activities. There’s Pickleball at Peaine Township Park at 10:00. COA Cardio Drumming and Art Therapy are no more now that the C-O-A no longer has an on-Island coordinator. There’s Women’s Bible Study at 10:00 a.m. at the BI Christian Church and at 10:30, there’s Senior Tai Chi at the BIC Center (brought to you not by the C-O-A, but as has long been the case by the BIC Center). The Weekly Bocce Ball roll is on at 4:00 on the courts at the Peaine Township Park.

School in Little Rock, Arkansas, under escort from soldiers of the Army’s 101st Airborne Division. The students had been blocked from attending by hostile crowds resisting a federal desegregation order. Their courage—and President Dwight Eisenhower’s decision
to enforce the order—makes the Little Rock Nine a defining symbol of the civil-rights movement.
