At its meeting next week on Tuesday the Peaine Township Planning Commission will consider changes to zoning on land near the municipal airport, near Sloptown Road and on Kings Highway near the stone house. Changes proposed are from agricultural to commercial by Kings Highway and east of the airport and from agricultural to Ag-Business south of the airport. There was a lot of opposition expressed to the proposed changes at a public hearing earlier this week with concerns expressed about changing the rural nature of the Island, increased traffic and what might be built. Member of the Planning Commission pointed out that they were working to address changes in the zoning ordinance and state requirements while planning for the future. There will be an opportunity for additional public input at the meeting this week and it will be available by Zoom. There are links to the minutes from the hearing and the agenda for next week’s meeting in today’s script online.
In Lansing, facing severe shortages of doctors, dentists, and other providers, Michigan lawmakers are considering major changes to how health care is delivered. Proposals include expanding the authority of nurse practitioners, creating temporary licenses for some internationally trained doctors, and joining interstate compacts to let providers work across state lines. The state is also relying more on newer roles like dental therapists to serve rural and underserved areas. Supporters say the changes are urgently needed as Michigan’s population ages, while opponents warn expanded roles could confuse patients and affect care quality.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says it is not targeting Michigan schools or bus stops and that no children were present during arrests this week in Ypsilanti, disputing local reports. The statement followed the arrest of four people Tuesday that sparked protests and a heated debate at the state Capitol. Washtenaw County’s Sheriff told Bridge Michigan that ICE told her it does not plan enforcement near schools.
Dangerous Arctic cold is gripping all of Michigan today, with wind chills in the mornings through tomorrow dropping to 25 to 30 below zero in some areas. Northern and central parts of the state will be the coldest, and officials warn of frostbite and hypothermia in minutes. Friday highs will struggle to reach the teens. The good news: a warming trend begins this weekend, with temperatures climbing back into the 20s by Sunday. But, the warmup will be brief will cold temps in the forecast for the end of next week, but not as harsh as this week.
