Community Calendar Report for Friday, August 1st, 2025

The man accused of stabbing 11 people at a Traverse City Walmart has had his bond raised to $1 million. Bradford Gille faces charges including terrorism and assault with intent to murder. His attorney says the family can’t post bond and is seeking a mental health evaluation. One victim remains hospitalized.

In Charlevoix, a house fire has claimed the life of  61-year-old William “Billy” Mosher IV. Crews found him after extinguishing the blaze on Clinton Street on Wednesday. Smoke inhalation is the suspected cause of death. The fire remains under investigation.

If you are headed across for the weekend, you’ll find comfortable temperatures on the weekend as the state a stretch of sunny, dry summer weather, with highs in the 70s and low 80s—but wildfire smoke from Canada continues to impact air quality across the state. On Beaver Island, the AQI dipped out of the red zone yesterday afternoon, but remains high at 116 as of this morning—still unhealthy for sensitive groups. The haze is expected to linger through the weekend.

The Golf Course has announced plans for the annual Homecoming Golf Tournament. It tees off August 9 at the Beaver Island Golf Course—you can register your four-person team now at 231-448-2301 or the pro shop.

BIRTHDAYS: Aidan Martin, Kim Jones and Antionette Calles are on our list today. Happy Birthday to Antionette, Kim and Aidan and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But it is very busy in town when the ferry arrives, and the warm weather means lots of folks at the public beach plus hikers and bikers everywhere. Plus, baby turtles are busy crossing. So, let’s be careful out there.

On this date in 1928, Detroit’s new zoo opens…and narrowly missed tragedy when a polar bear named Morris escapes his enclosure. Morris comes across acting Mayor John Nagel who, unfamiliar with the danger, reaches out to shake his paw. Luckily for Nagel and the zoo, trainers rush in and save him. And, in 1981, another first day that is, for a time at least, more successful.  M-T-V launches with the tune Video Killed the Radio Star. Turns out not so much.  We’re still here.  M-T-V in anything resembling its original form, is not.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is petulant (adjective) [PET-chuh-lunt]. Petulant describes a person who is angry and annoyed, or an attitude or behavior showing the emotions of such a person. Hailing from Middle French and Latin, petulant began its English tenure in the late 16th century with the meaning recorded in our unabridged dictionary as “wanton or immodest in speech or behavior”—in other words, “lewd” or “obscene.” The word eventually softened, at least somewhat, from describing those who are forward in—shall we say—prurient ways, to those who are forward by being merely rude and angrily bold. Today the word is most commonly used to describe someone acting snippy and snippety, snappish and snappy, displaying an often childish ill or short temper of the kind that tends to arise from annoyance at not getting one’s way.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday

Here’s a thought for the day from fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent who was born on this day in 1936: “Without elegance of the heart, there is no elegance.

On a lighter note…

What do you call a polar bear without ears? Polar B.
