News Update

Community Calendar for Wednesday, September 6th, 2023

Another attempt by Jim “The Shark” Dreyer to swim across Lake Michigan has failed. He made a go of it yesterday from Milwaukee, but after getting 23 miles into the 82 mile trip, the attempt had to be called due to strong currents and worsening weather. Unlike his early attempt this summer when he swam with a support crew nearby, this time he was on his own with a small boat tethered behind him.

The library says the community is getting close to meeting its summer challenge of 100,000 minutes spent reading.  Logs so far tally 86,000 minutes.  That leaves just 14,000 minutes to get logged and dropped off by Friday.

Some fall hours updates for you.  The Circle M is now open for dinner Tuesdays through Saturday. The Eager Beaver Carwash and laundry is open 8:30 to 6:00 Monday through Friday and 10:00 to 3:00 on Sunday.  Dalwhinnie will have Pizza Friday evening and tacos Saturday evening for the Feile, but that’s it for a while for dinner for them. Beaver Island Gallery will have a special Feile opening on Saturday from 11 to 4.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for the week. St. James Planning Commission meets Tuesday at 6:00. Peaine Planning Commission meets Wednesday morning at 9:00. St. James Finance and Administration meets Wednesday at 1:00. BICS Committee of the Whole meets Wednesday at 5:30. That’s it for the week. Meeting locations and more details are in the calendar entries online.

On the fun front today, evening Pickleball is at 6:00. That’s over on the outdoor courts at Peaine Township Park.

Thursday, Pickleball is from 9:00 to 11:00 on the outdoor courts at Peaine Township Park. Also at 9:00 Gina Mangra and the Beaver Island Archipelago Trails Association are offering a mushroom identification hike. Join Gina for a hije on Dody’s Camp Trail through birch and hardwoods where mushrooms love to grow. You’ll be back around noon. Also Thursday, Women’s Bible Study is on the calendar over at the Christian Church. That’s at 10:00. The resale shop is open from noon to 4. And, it is Burger and a Beer night at the Shamrock.

Friday, the Irish Feile kicks off with all sorts of events including currach races on the bay, music all around town and cultural events.  We’ll have more on the festival later in the week. No senior coffee and donuts to keep the BIC Center lobby free for Irish Feile arrivals. But, upstairs in the Hang Out Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on at 10:30. The Resale Shop is open from noon to 4:00. B-I-C-S Soccer and Volleyball squads head out Friday afternoon for their first games of the season up in Hannahville. Friday is Pizza Night at Dalwhinnie. This is likely to be the last night for pizza there for a while, so enjoy those pies while you can. If you fancy a burger rather than pizza, the Elks have their monthly burger night set for Friday…with drive-through service from 5:00 to 6:30 at the Gregg Fellowship Center. And, at the BIC Center, the Byrne Brothers will be here Friday evening at 5:00 playing as part of the Festival.  A festival wristband is required for admission. Seats are limited with nothing pre-assigned, so plan to arrive a little early to get a seat.

Highlights for the rest of the week include:

Saturday kicks off with Pickleball outdoors on the Peaine Township Park courts from 9:00 to 11:00. The Resale Shop will be open from noon to 4:00. Lego Club is at the library at 1:00. Whiskey Point Lighthouse tower will be open from 1:00 to 3:00. It’s Taco Night at Dalwhinnie starting at 5:00…we hear that will be the last taco night for a while, too.  And, Saturday evening, Aoife Scott returns to the BIC Center with her band in another show that’s part of the Irish Feile. Be ready to show your wristband. Showtime is 6:30.

Sunday there are services at the Episcopal Mission at 9:00, the Christian Church and the Lighthouse Fellowship at 10:00 and mass at Holy Cross at 12:15.

Looking ahead to next week…

Monday is a quite day on the island. The only thing on the Calendar is Pizza Night at the Shamrock.

The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is in the Hangout at 9:00. Pickleball is on the outdoor courts at Peaine Township Park at 9:00. At 10:00, there’s a Veteran’s Social at the BIC Center running until 2:00. If you are a vet drop by to pick up a free COA meal voucher. Also, it’s Taco Tuesday at the Bodega.

NAME OF DAY: Today’s BIC Center name of the day is Mackenzie. If that’s your name, drop by the BIC Center today for a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS:  Darrell Butler, Sr., Joe McDonough, Sienna Anderson and Brian Schild are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Sienna, Brian, and Darrell and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports but be on the lookout for kids and traffic around school. Let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1522 After three years, 42,000 miles, and the first circumnavigation of the world, the Nao Victoria sails back into her Spanish home port. Of the original five ships and more than 200 sailors that started Magellan’s expedition, only the Victoria and 18 men have returned from the globe-spanning voyage. Also on this date in 1997, The USS Grace Murray Hopper is commissioned by the US Navy. Hopper, a rear admiral in the US Navy, made ground-breaking contributions in the computer field including helping to program some of the earliest electronic computers and developing the first computer language compiler. On this day image

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is pareidolia (noun) [pair-eye-DOH-lee-uh], which refers to the tendency to perceive a specific and often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern.

If you’ve ever spotted an image of a dog or a shoe in the clouds, you’ve exhibited what is called pareidolia. Pareidolia emerged in English in 1962, borrowed from the German word Pareidolie, [par-EYE-doh-lee] itself a combination of the Greek prefix par-, the Greek noun eídōlon [eye-doh-lon](“image, reflection”), and the German suffix -ie. But although the word may be relatively new to English speakers, the concept is not. During the Renaissance, for example, Leonardo da Vinci once wrote, “… if you look at any walls spotted with various stains or with a mixture of different kinds of stones, if you are about to invent some scene you will be able to see in it a resemblance to various different landscapes adorned with mountains, rivers, rocks, trees, plains, wide valleys, and various groups of hills.” So the next time you see the man or even a toad in the moon, you can think of your kinship with Da Vinci.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday

Here’s a thought for the day from computer pioneer Admiral Grace Mary Hopper: “One accurate measurement is worth a thousand expert opinions.”

On a lighter note: What would happen if  Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo got into a fight? It would end in a draw.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, September 6th, 2023. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening.
