News Update

Community Calendar for Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021

From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021.

First some news …

Another day where no news is good news from the Health Center. No new tests. No new positives. Meantime, two of the positive cases previously reported are now more than 30 days old, so the active case count on the island is now unofficially 17.  No new data from the state yesterday.  Next report is due out this afternoon.  We’ll have an update tomorrow.

Even as the Grand Traverse County School board to lift the mask mandate in schools there after January 1, Munson healthcare officials are saying that COVID-19 spread with the new omicron variant may requite the schools to move to virtual instruction.  While they say we are experiencing some relief in the numbers right now, that trend is likely to reverse as we move into 2022.  Indeed, they say next year could bring more cases than 2021, although they also note that prediction depends on a lot of unknowns about the impact of the new variant.

Meantime, Munson continues to report that the vast majority of those hospitalized are not vaccinated.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for the week: None.  We’re all done as we head into the Christmas holiday. Next Week, St. James has a Finance Committee meeting set for Monday at 1:00 and the BIESA has their monthly meeting set for Thursday at 2:00. More details are in the calendar entries online.

On the fun front today, Wednesday, Nothing but Needles is on at the Peaine Township Hall. They start at 9. Crafting fun and fellowship for everyone.

Thursday, Euchre is on Thursday evening at Whiskey Point Brewery.  Cards with the table at 7. School is out, so no C-O-A lunch signup.

Friday, is Christmas Eve.  The BIC Center will be closed, but W-V-B-I will start two days of special Christmas program including lost of your favorite Christmas tunes and some new ones we’ve found to keep things interesting.  Plus, our Christmas specials from all of your favorite W-V-B-I shows, Christmas radio theater and more. And, we’ll have reports from NORAD on the progress of Santa’s sleigh. No movies on Saturday.  The BIC Center will re-open for regular hours Monday through Thursday next week, but will be closed on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Movies are back on January 8th with Space Jam and Free Guy.

Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship.  Times and more details are in the calendar.

Tuesday, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on here at the BIC Center. That’s up in the hangout at 10:30.

BIRTHDAYS:  Kaylee Coffell is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Kaylee and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None.  But…let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1967, a new film is released starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. The story of an aimless recent college graduate resonates with audiences and critics alike. The movie also helps a folk duo from Queens, NY, graduate to superstardom. (Bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: benign (adjective) [bih-NYNE] which means not causing harm or injury. In medicine, it refers to tumors that are not cancerous. Benign comes from Latin benignus, which was formed from bene, meaning “well,” and gignere, “to beget.” Gignere is the root of such English words as genius and germ. (Merriam-Webster)

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Wednesday…

Here’s a thought for the day: “Fear can hold you prisoner and hope will set you free.”

On a lighter note: What does a bunny rabbit hang by the fireplace? Celery stalkings.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
