Community Calendar for Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023

A Michigan State Police trooper investigating a break-in at a business in Otsego County followed a path in the woods to crack the crime on Monday. Along the trail, he discovered a stash of 16-thousand dollars of stolen property from the break in and from multiple other businesses. A camera at a business next to the crime scene helped identify a suspect who was arrested and is in the Otsego County jail.

Although it will be warm enough today, you’ve no doubt noticed the cooler mornings as we plow through August. And now, M-Live meteorologists are pointing out the southern trek of the rain-snow line, which is forecast to make it well into Hudson Bay in the next few days. Meantime, below freezing temperatures just 5000 feet up will make it even closer. There’s a weather service animation of that in today’s script online. Time to get outside and enjoy the warmth.

And to that end, the Beaver Island Archipelago Trails Association just announced a special nature walk for tomorrow morning. Ed and Beth Leuck will lead the walk on the Seven Bridges Trail. They are experts on the flora, fauna and habitats will discuss things seen along the way.  Meet at 9:00 at the trailhead across from the Wagner Campground on East Side drive.

NAME OF DAY: Today’s BIC Center name of the day is Frankie. If that’s your name, drop by the BIC Center today for a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS:  Elizabeth Wiser is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Elizabeth and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  There’s congestion when the boat arrives, but no delays inbound or outbound to the airports and parking seems to be fine in town although the streets were full last night for Let’s Get Quizzical at the BIC Center. So, let’s be careful out there. The Deer are getting busy again.

ON THIS DAY in 1991 British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee’s proposal for a ‘hypertext project’ comes to fruition at the CERN laboratories in Switzerland with the help of Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau, and now the ‘World Wide Web‘ is opened to outside users. On this day image

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is duplicity (noun) [doo-PLISS-uh-tee], which is a formal word that refers to dishonest behavior meant to trick or deceive someone. We’ve all probably dealt with someone who acted a little two-faced—they said one thing and did another, for example, or they talked “from both sides of their mouth.” If such behavior has made you do a double take or left you feeling double-crossed, you may be single-minded in your quest to learn more about duplicityDuplicity comes from a long line of “double” talk, starting with its Latin ancestor duplex, which means “double” or “twofold.” Duplex is also the source of the English word duplex (which can be a noun meaning “a two-family house” or an adjective meaning “double”), and it is the root of another term for doubling it up, duplicate.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday

Here’s a thought for the day World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee: “You affect the world by what you browse.”

On a lighter note: What do the World Wide Web and the Prime Minister of Israel have in common?

They are both Net and Yahoo.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening.
