The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is set to transport low-level radioactive soil, concrete, and groundwater to the Wayne Disposal facility, located about 30 minutes from Detroit. While local officials assure residents that safety measures are in place, concerns about transparency and environmental justice are being raised by community leaders. The waste is part of a broader cleanup of a Niagara Falls storage site. Map from Google Maps In list action, Petoskey has made the World Atlas list Most Adorable Small Towns in the Great Lakes. Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is Ossify (verb) [AH-suh-fye]. In general contexts, something that ossifies becomes hardened or conventional and opposed to change. In medical contexts, something that ossifies (such as cartilage) forms or is transformed into bone. The skeletons of mammals originate as soft cartilage that gradually transforms into hard bone; in humans, the process begins in the womb and continues until late adolescence. This bone-building process was given the name ossification in the late 17th century, with the verb ossify following soon after. The words come from the Latin root os, meaning “bone.” (Os is also a synonym of bone in scientific contexts.) Both terms have come to refer to figurative types of hardening, such as that of the heart or mind. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Winston Churchill: “I no longer listen to what people say, I just watch what they do. Behavior never lies.” On a lighter note: Why do scuba divers fall backwards to enter the lake? If they fell forwards, they would just fall into the boat. |
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, August 21st, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening. |
