BIRTHDAYS: Marlene Wiser,m Ryan Oliver and Riley Williamson celebrate today. Happy Birthday to Marlene Ryan and Riley and if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports, island beltway running smoothly and no bridge delays. Still, let’s be careful out there. |
ON THIS DAY in 1959, Miles Davis remakes jazz music with a landmark album. A new cool modality unfurls on Miles Davis’ latest album, ‘Kind of Blue.’ Davis’ brilliant horn playing, and his sublime supporting ensemble, including Bill Evans and John Coltrane, will make the disc an enduring success, and it will be considered by some the greatest jazz record of all time. |
MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: wreak (verb) [REEK] which means “to bring about or cause (something that is harmful or damaging).” It is often used in the phrase “wreak havoc.” In its early days, wreak was synonymous with avenge, a meaning exemplified when Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus proclaims “We will solicit heaven, and move the gods / To send down Justice for to wreak our wrongs.” This sense is now archaic, but the association hasn’t been lost: although wreak is today most often paired with havoc, it is also still sometimes paired with vengeance. We humbly suggest you avoid wreaking either, no matter how badly you may crave your just deserts. |
Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Wednesday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Miles Davis: “Sometimes you have to play a long time to be able to play like yourself.” On a lighter note: How did the alligator feel after eating the bird? Full of egret. |
