Now, time for a look at Phyllis’s posts for today.. ON THIS DATE in 1994, Norway’s most famous painting, “The Scream” by Edvard Munch, was recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. The fragile painting was recovered undamaged at a hotel in Asgardstrand, about 40 miles south of Oslo, police said.
The iconic 1893 painting of a waiflike figure on a bridge was stolen in only 50 seconds during a break-in on February 12, the opening day of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. Two thieves broke through a window of the National Gallery, cut a wire holding the painting to the wall and left a note reading “Thousand thanks for the bad security!”
DID YOU KNOW: in Wyoming you may not take a picture of a rabbit from January to April without an official permit?
WORD OF THE DAY: wilder (WIL-der) which means to cause to lose one’s way. The rare, archaic verb wilder “to lead astray” is pronounced with a short -i- as in children, not a long -i- as in child. The etymology of wilder is difficult: it looks like a frequentative verb formed from the adjective wild, or an irregular derivative from wilderness that was influenced by wander. Wilder entered English in the early 17th century.
Birthdays: Today, Jaquie LaFreniere, Dave Avery, Tessa Jones and Beaver Jackson Kirby. Happy birthday to each of them and, if we missed you on that list—Happy Birthday to you from all of us at W-V-B-I land Community Center.
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…
Here’s a thought for the day: “The heights of your achievements are determined by the depth of your self-belief, the strength of your resolve and the intensity of your efforts.”
On a lighter note…
What do you call an ugly sweater on he world’s cutest dog? A pugly sweater.
SFX: Wah, wah, wah….
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Tuesday, May 7th, 2019.
I’m Kevin Boyle at the pest free Hogarth Pest Control Studios of the Voice of Beaver Island wishing you a great day and asking you: why not make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening.
