News Update

Community Calendar for Tuesday, May 17th, 2022

After a raft of positive tests last week, It’s another no news is good news day at the Health Center. No new tests or positive results.

Meantime, State health officials updated hospitalization usage data yesterday and that shows another uptick in COVID-19 occupancy.  The rate for regular beds now stands at 4.9%. It’s 3.7% for I-C-U beds.  Overall occupancy remains near normal at 79.9% for regular beds and 76.3% for the I-C-U.

Traverse City Commissioners yesterday approved plans for the sale of recreational marijuana in the city. The plan allows a limited number of outlets in a set of overlapping zones. Reports say applications will be accepted in June. The sale and use of the happy weed remains illegal under federal law.

BASH…the school’s end of year banquet and party…has been reset to this coming weekend. It had been planned for this Saturday.  Likewise, the 4th, 5th and 6th grade play Wingin’ It that had been set for this Friday has been rescheduled to June 7th.

And, a reminder that the fire danger level on the island is set at very high. Now is not the time to be burning anything outside. We don’t need a fire out here like is happening now over in the Pigeon River Country state forest.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for the week: b-i-a Board meets this afternoon at 4:00.  The meeting is open to the public and is at the BIC Center. Trailer is on the BIC Center website at bic center dot org.  Also Saturday evening, it’s time for the B-I-C-S High School Banquet and BASH, a special dinner for students, teachers and invited guests followed by dancing and fun. Amidst it all, there’ll be a ride on the Emerald Isle. Come on down to the dock and wish the kids well.

Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship.  Times and more details are in the calendar.

BIRTHDAYS:  Megan Heller is celebrating today. Happy to Megan and, if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip.  But, the critters are busy with spring activities, so let’s careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1954, the U-S Supreme Court overturns years of precedent and rules that school segregation is unconstitutional. The unanimous ruling in ‘Brown v. Board of Education’ will be a major landmark in the growing civil rights movement. Also on this date in 1902, a Greek archaeologist examining finds from a shipwreck notices a gear wheel embedded in rock. Decades later, examinations by X-ray and gamma ray will reveal the bronze gear clockwork mechanism to be a complex analog computer that is 2,000 years old.

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: nonpareil

(adjective) [nahn-puh-REL], which means “having no equal.” Trace nonpareil back to its Middle French origins and you’ll find that it comes from a term meaning “not equal.” Pareil itself comes from a Latin par, which means “equal,” and non- is a common prefix meaning “not.” In addition to its adjectival use, nonpareil also functions as a noun describing an individual of unequaled excellence (“the nonpareil of cellists”), and as the name of a chocolate candy disk covered with small sugar pellets.

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Tuesday…

Here’s a thought for the day Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall who, before joining the court, successfully argued the Brown case: “In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.”

On a lighter note: Why was the chiropractor so busy? Back to back meetings.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, May 17th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
