TRAFFIC: All is quiet on this first Tuesday of 20-20. No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. But, the kids are back to school, let’s be careful out there.
BIRTHDAYS: Alexandra Baron is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to her and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center.
ON THIS DAY in 1979, Cambodia’s Pol Pot overthrown. The Khmer Rouge and its leader, Pol Pot, are ousted from power as Vietnamese forces take over Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh, ending four years of brutal dictatorship during which from 1.5 million to 2 million Cambodians dies unnatural deaths, some 500,000 to 1 million by execution.
WORD OF THE DAY: dragoon (verb) [druh-GOON], which means to subjugate or persecute by harsh use of troops; to force into submission or compliance especially by violent measures. A dragoon was a mounted European infantryman of the 17th and 18th centuries armed with a firearm called by the same name. No arm-twisting should be needed to get you to believe that the firearm’s name, which came to English from French, is derived from its semblance to a fire-breathing dragon when fired. History has recorded the dragonish nature of the dragoons who persecuted the French Protestants in the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV. The persecution by means of the dragoons led to the use of the word dragoon as a verb.
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…
Here’s a thought for the day: “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”
On a lighter note: Who was that Dutch painter who was famous for his portraits? Hmmm. Let me think. Sorry. I can’t seem to Remembrandt.
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Tuesday, January 7th, 2020. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from the pest free Hogarth Pest Control Studios of the Voice of Beaver Island wishing you a good year ahead and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best year—the best decade–ever? And, thanks for listening.
