If you travel down to T-C from time to time, especially to Munson, here’s word on another road project to keep in mind. M-72 near Tom’s West Bay will shut down for four weeks later this month as utility companies bury power lines ahead of a $25.8 million road rebuild set for 2025. The project includes a 2.2-mile stretch of Grandview Parkway and a new roundabout at M-72/M-22. The work is a precursor to major construction beginning later this spring. MDOT will share project updates on that at a February 11 open house in T-C.

On this day in 1789 Congress set as this as the date by which states are required to choose electors for the country’s first-ever presidential election. A month later, on February 4, George Washington was elected president by state electors and sworn into office on April 30, 1789.
As it did in 1789, the United States still uses the Electoral College system, which today gives all American citizens over the age of 18 the right to vote for electors, who in turn vote for the president. The president and vice president are the only elected federal officials chosen by the Electoral College instead of by direct popular vote.
