News Update

Community Calendar for Tuesday, January 14, 2025

Michigan’s cherry industry faces mounting losses due to extreme weather events. Farmers are adapting through crop diversification and orchard management changes, but financial strain persists, prompting calls for government assistance. When disaster strikes, farmers look to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for help. The agency is, among other things, an essential provider of farm safety net programs like federal crop insurance and emergency crop subsidies, or disaster assistance aid.

In another cybersecurity news story, A data breach at PowerSchool, a prominent education software company, occurred December 28, 2024.
Several Michigan school districts have reported being impacted by the PowerSchool data breach:
          •       Greenville Public Schools
          •       Kalamazoo Public Schools
          •       Paw Paw Public Schools
          •       Howell Public Schools
It’s important to note that not all Michigan districts using PowerSchool were affected.
PowerSchool has these Michigan school districts notifying parents and assessing next steps. While the company has not disclosed the number of affected students, districts are investigating and communicating with families.

TRAFFIC: No delays, but let’s be careful out there.
On this day in 1784, the Continental Congress ratifies the Treaty of Paris, ending the War for Independence.
In the document, which was known as the Second Treaty of Paris because the Treaty of Paris was also the name of the agreement that had ended the Seven Years’ War in 1763, Britain officially agreed to recognize the independence of its 13 former colonies as the new United States of America.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day
Deus ex machina – A deus ex machina is a character or thing that suddenly enters the story in a novel, play, movie, etc., and solves a problem that had previously seemed impossible to solve.
// The introduction of a new love interest in the final act was the perfect deus ex machina for the main character’s happy ending.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…
Here’s a thought for the day from Ralph Waldo Emerson “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn”
or you could say, with every small beginning lies the potential for something extraordinary
On a lighter note… A surgeon walked into an operating room and said softly next to the nervous patient, “David, don’t worry, you’ll be fine.” The patient replied, “But my name’s not David!” The surgeon looked back and said, “I know – my name is David!”
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, January 14th, 2025. I’m Greg Doig reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
