Community Calendar for Thursday, September 9th, 2021

From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Thursday, September 9th, 2021.

First some news…

Both townships have hearings planned for today on the question of adopting no wake zones for Font lake.  The Peaine hearing will also cover Fox lake.  Concerns have arisen over the operation of jet skis and boats near loons and other native residents of the lakes as well as the damage caused by waves in the lakes.  Safety concerns have been expressed as well.  The townships don’t have the authority to impose the zones; that lies with the state D-N-R, but petitions from the townships requesting the zones are the first step in the D-N-R process.  The Peaine township hearing is at 2:00 at the township hall. St. James will hold its hearing at 5:30 at the St. James township hall.

The state reported COVID data yesterday, but say technical issue stopped it from including data from the weekend. So it isn’t clear how much the latest numbers tell us.  They show an average of 1,735 new cases a day if you assume five days are covered, but almost 2,900 a day if only three days of data are there.  The real number is probably closer to 2,000 given the typical dip in weekend reporting.  There were 57 total new deaths in the report, plus 27 reclassified deaths.  Locally, in our eight-county region, we had no new deaths and 61 new cases. 16 of the new cases were in Charlevoix.  On the island, no new tests, no tests pending and no new cases.

Hospital utilization for COVID-19 cases continues to run high.  For regular beds it stands at 5.4%.  For I-C-U beds it’s 10.9%. Utilization locally remains high, but steady.  There are five patients at Munson in Charlevoix, all in the I-C-U, and nine at McLaren in Petoskey with three in the I-C-U.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

BIRTHDAYS:  Joe Timsak, Sue Howard and Theresa Mooneey are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Sue, Theresa and Joe, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you, too, you from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip.  But, let’s be careful out there.

Fire Danger Level:  Low.

ON THIS DAY in 1839 an inventor makes pioneering photograph. England’s John Herschel is a true Renaissance man, and now the mathematician, inventor, chemist, and discoverer of the stunningly beautiful cyanotype process, makes the first photograph on a glass plate. (Bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: brogue (noun) [BROHG], which means: a low shoe, usually made of leather, with perforations and a wing tip. Like me, did you expect brogue to be defined as “an Irish accent”? You’re probably not alone; however, brogue has two homographs (words that are spelled—and, in this case, pronounced—the same but have different origins or parts of speech). Today we’re featuring brogue, the shoe, which comes from the Irish word bróg and probably derives from an Old Norse term meaning “leg covering.” Brogue, the accent, comes from a different Irish word, barróg, which means “accent” or “speech impediment.”  AT least I got the Irish origin right. (Merriam-Webster)

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Kentucky Fried Chicken’s Colnel Sanders—whose birthday was on this date: “One has to remember that every failure can be a steppingstone to something.”

On a lighter note: Why did the police officer cross the road?  To give the chicken a jaywalking ticket.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, September 9th, 2021. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
