The question of whether and how to regulate short term rentals on the island has bubbled up to the top of community discussion, spurred by an effort by the Peaine Township planning Commission to update its fee schedule. Some folks saw that and because of some examples presented were concerned that the commission was looking at recommending fees at their meeting this week. That led to a lively discussion on Facebook about how to handle the increasing number of homes being used for short term rentals on the island—and the increasing cost of those rentals, the increasing cost of housing and the lack of long-term affordable rentals. Reading through the comments gives a good overview of the concerns from many points of view, so we’ve added that content to the news feed. Meantime, over in Harbor Springs where the city has implemented a license requirement for short term rentals, the city council earlier this week followed planning commission recommendations to amend the license ordinance to set a cap on short term rentals of 61 licenses in single-family housing districts. They also established a waitlist for license applications. The amendments allow an unlimited number of short-term rental licenses in other districts. The commission believes that the number of short-term rentals in the city should be limited to five percent of available locations. Although that limit wasn’t built into the ordinance, that was expressed as a goal of the scheme that was adopted. The Michigan D-N-R has released an update to the state’s endangered and threatened species list. It’s just the seventh update to the list in the 50 years it has been around. This update adds 58 rare species to the list while removing 36. Most of the additions are wildflowers, but the list also two species of bees and three species of bats added. On the fun front today, Thursday, C-O-A has chair Yoga set at the Peaine Township hall for 9:30. Pickleball is 10:00 to noon in the Theater at the BIC Center. And C-O-A has Bingocize, a health information game based on BINGO out at the Peaine Township hall at 10:30. Women’s Bible Study is on the calendar over at the Christian Church. That’s at 10:00. Resale shop is open from noon to 4. At 1:00, there’s Story Hour for preschoolers at the library. B-I-C-S has a sports awards ceremony set for 5:00 Thursday evening. Meantime, its Italian Day this Thursday at the Bodega and Burger and a Beer night at the Shamrock. Also, Euchre is on tap at Whiskey Point Brewery Thursday evening. Cards hit the table at 7:00. Friday, Pickleball is on from 10:00 to noon in the Theater. And, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on at 10:30 up in the Hangout. Re-sale Shop is open again from noon to 4:00. Games Galore is 1:00 to 4:00 in the Hangout. The Historical Society and the Northern Islander have a reception to celebrate the launch of the paper from the Print Shop. It’s a chance to meet the new team. Alongside that the Chamber has set their Spring After Hours event. After some time at the Print Shop, they’ll head up the street to the Emerald Isle Inn for a look at the changes there. And, don’t forget. Friday is Pizza Night at Dalwhinnies Eat in or take out. Just get your order in before 7:00 p.m. Saturday, The Resale Shop will be open from noon to 4:00. Lego Club is at the library at 1:00. Building fun for all ages. At BIC Center Saturday movies are on at 4:00 and 7:00. Mummies is the matinee at 4:00. Three ancient mummies wind up in modern day London to recover a royal ring stolen by an English archaeologist. The evening show is Champions at 7:00. Woddy Harrelson stars as a washed up N-B-A coached assigned to coach a team of players with different abilities. It’s a heartwarming, fun-filled story of a team coming together to win more than basketball games. Both are great shows for the whole family.
Sunday there are services at the Christian Church at 10:00 and mass at Holy Cross at 12:15. Also Sunday Brunch at the Shamrock from 9:00 to 2:00. Looking ahead to next week… Monday. no planned community activities. B-I-C-S AP Calc students have their exams today. They are well prepared and will do well. Afterwards, Monday is Sliders Day at the Bodega while the Shamrock has all-you-can-eat pizza and salad for dinner. Tuesday, Talking Threads will be crafting out at the Peaine Township Hall starting at 9:00. Pickleball is on from 10:00 to noon in the Theater at the BIC Center. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout. It’s Open Mic Night at the BIC Center sponsored by the Bodega. To get on the set list, sign-up during the day at the Bodega. There’ll be snacks provided at the show up in the Hangout. You are welcome to bring your own beverage and, if you like dinner. Grab it at the Concession Stand, the Bodega, where it’s Taco Tuesday, or the Shamrock. Wednesday, Time for Art is from 5:00 to 7:00 at the BIC Center. And the special at the Bodega on Wednesday is a Coney Dog and fries. |

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is chivalry (noun) [SHIV-ul-ree] which refers to the qualities of the ideal knight, such as honor, generosity, and courtesy—in other words, an honorable and polite way of behaving toward others. It is used especially to refer to such behavior as expressed by men toward women. Chivalry is dead, they say. The statement is indisputably true in at least one sense: the word chivalry first referred to medieval knights, as in “the king was accompanied by his chivalry,” and we’re quite certain those knights are all long gone. But the word’s meaning has shifted since the 14th century, with other meanings joining the first over the years. Today, chivalry typically refers to an honorable and polite way of behaving, especially by men toward women. And when people say “chivalry is dead” they’re usually bemoaning either a perceived lack of good manners among those they encounter generally, or a dearth of men holding doors for appreciative women. The word came to English by way of French, and is ultimately from the Late Latin word caballārius, [caba-lare-ee-oos] meaning “horseback rider, groom,” ancestor too of another term for a daring medieval gentleman-at-arms: cavalier. In a twist, the adjective form of cavalier is often used to describe someone who is overly nonchalant about important matters—not exactly chivalrous. |
