Community Calendar for Thursday, May 31, 2018

Today is Thursday, May 31st, 2018. I’m Kevin Boyle, with today’s WVBI Community Calendar.
Here’s a quick look at island news:
Yesterday afternoon was awards time over at Beaver Island Community School. B-I-C-S gives Citizen of the Year and Student of the Year awards to middle and high school students. Nominations are made and votes cast by the teaching staff. A full house of students, teachers and community members was on hand to see principal Wil Cwikiel announce the awards. And, in case you missed the event, we have the results for you right here this morning:
For 6th to 8th grade citizen of the year, the nominees were Olga Burton, Aedan Cole and Micah Richards. Aedan was the winner. For high school citizen of the year, the nominees were Forrest Avery, Elsie Burton, Kevin James and Quinn Jones. Kevin took the prize.
For student of the year the 6th to 8th grade nominees were Olga Burton, Aedan Cole and McKenna Turner. Olga got the trophy. And, finally, for high school student of the year, the nominees were Forrest Avery, Elsie Burton, Kai Drost and Erin Wiser. Erin was the winner, and received a nice compliment from Principal Cwikiel who said she was the most self-motivated student he had seen in all his time teaching.
Seniors Katie LaFreniere and Forrest Avery were also honored at the event. They both received graduation decorations for election to and participation in National Honor Society and outstanding academic achievement. Forrest just barely beat Katie out, but he will be this year’s valedictorian and Katie will be the Salutatorian.
The event was topped off with a presentation made by Renee DeYoung from North Central Michigan College. She awarded Katie a N-C-M-C presidential scholarship that will cover all her tuition there-so more than $17,000.
Both of our community school graduates are headed off to college this year Katie at N-C-M-C and Forrest to join his sister at the University of Michigan.
Here are some events coming up:

Here’s a thought from Thomas Edison: Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. On a lighter note: Did you hear about the cobra’s stand-up act?
It killed.
