Community Calendar for Thursday, June 9th, 2022

The Health Center is reporting another six COVID-19 tests with three back positive. That brings the seven-day positive test count up three to 36. The state released its weekly report on new cases and deaths yesterday showing another downtick in new cases, but an uptick in deaths. Seven day running average for new cases statewide is now 2,226, down about 100, but the running average for deaths has jumped from five to 15. Latest state hospital utilization data shows steady numbers all around with no changes locally.

A bill that would prohibit the promotion of race or gender stereotyping in classrooms continues to move forward through the state legislature. Examples of race or gender stereotyping, according to the bill, are statements, beliefs or ideas that individuals “hold a collective quality or belief” or “bear collective guilt for historical wrongs” on the basis of their race or gender. Democrats say a law on such matters is unnecessary and that lawmakers should be focused on the teacher shortage, curriculum improvement and funding for education. Two of them walked out of a recent hearing on the bill in protest.

Petoskey is looking at ways to address what is widely viewed as a regional housing crisis. Changes being considered would allow for more accessory dwelling units in order to provide a more diverse range of housing options in the city, including affordable and workforce housing. On the island, both township planning commissions and the B-I-A are looking at ways to address issues for year round and summer workforce housing.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for the week: Just one left. Elks Club meets Thursday Evening at 5:00 at Peaine Township Hall.

On the fun front today, Thursday, Tai Chi is on at the BIC Center at 9:30. Pickleball is on, too, outside on tennis courts from 10 to noon. Games Galore is on up on the Hangout from 1:00 to 4:00. Also, Open Mic Night at the Bodega is on and will become Music on the Porch as the event moves outside for the warm weather. Sign-up at 6:30. Performances begin at 7:00.

Friday, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30. And, at 12:30 it is time for BINGO brought to you by the C-O-A. Friday starts a statewide Free Fishing Weekend on the island and the official celebration of lilac blooms on the island—and they are out in force…the lilacs that is.

On Saturday, Pickleball is on 10 to noon. But, it appears the plant sale at the Health Center is off, so scratch that one from your list.

Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, the Episcopal Mission and the Lighthouse fellowship.  Times and more details are in the calendar.

Coming up next week there are basketball camps set for B-I-C-S—both elementary and high school.

And, a final calendar note…tickets for the BIC Center W-V-B-I Secret Garden Summer Gala or on sale. You can get them at the BIC Center front Desk or online at tickets dot BIC Center dot org. This year’s event will be in Gene Masta’s beautiful gardens surrounding the old Lifesaving station that once stood at Whiskey Point…and that is now his summer home. Strolling dinner, music, libations, raffles and both silent and live auctions will add to the fun of mingling with your island friends in the Secret Garden.

Monday, Chair Yoga is scheduled up in the Hangout.  Start time is 10:30.

Tuesday, Pickleball is on at 10:00 over on the Municipal Tennis Courts. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout.

Wednesday, senior Chair Yoga is on up in the Hangout at the BIC Center at 10:30. This evening, BINGO is on over at Gregg Fellowship Center, Doors open at 6:15 for fellowship. Games start at 7:00.

BIRTHDAYS:  Jake Drost is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Jake and, if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  No delays inbound or outbound to the airports, no traffic on the island beltway and bridges are clear. But, with leaves out there are lots of new blind spots. So, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1973 ‘Big Red’ wins the first Triple Crown in 25 years. A chestnut colt runs the Belmont Stakes in record time and this victory, together with previous wins at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, give Secretariat the first US Triple Crown in a quarter century.

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY:  evanescent (adjective) [ev-uh-NESS-unt], which is something that quickly like a vapor. The fragile, airy quality of evanescent things reflects the etymology of the word evanescent itself. It’s from a form of the Latin verb evanescere, which means “to evaporate” or “to vanish.” (Evanescere is also the ultimate source of vanish.) Given the similarity in spelling between the two words, you might expect evaporate to be from this family as well, but its source is another steamy Latin root, evaporare.

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday…

Here’s a thought for the day: “You may never know what results come of your actions, but if you do nothing, there will be no results.”

On a lighter note: Why did the toilet paper cross the road? Because it was on a roll.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, June 9th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
