Bridge Michigan is reporting that Bird flu is the likely culprit in the deaths of nearly 1,500 Caspian terns, black-crowned seabirds that feed along islands in Lake Michigan. Wildlife biologists are finding whole colonies of birds dead or dying on the islands. Caspian terns are listed as threatened in Michigan and endangered in Wisconsin. If you spot dead birds on the beach on the island, be sure to let Jaquie LaFreniere know at the library. |

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to either airport. The beltway is running smoothly and the bridges are clear, but summer traffic is picking up everywhere and there are delays in town around ferry times…so, let’s be careful out there. |

ON THIS DAY in 1953 the first Chevrolet Corvette rolls off the line. Built in Flint, Michigan, the ‘Vette had been designed solely for the 1953 New York Auto Show, but enthusiasm from the public and Chevy’s chief engineer led to production of this consumer model. It will become an iconic sports car, with the one millionth Corvette being produced in 1992 and, finally, after years of promises, a mid-engined Corvette on sale now. |

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: scintillate (verb) [SIN-tuh-layt], which means “to dazzle or impress with liveliness or wit.” The initial spark of the verb scintillate was the Latin noun scintilla, meaning, well, “spark.” The ember of scintilla in turn developed into the verb scintillāre, “to sparkle.” Scintillate retains this meaning in expressing the action of gleaming, glittery things, as when jewelry or the surface of a lake in full sun scintillates. But the word can and often does mean “to sparkle” in a figurative sense—that is, to dazzle or impress with a brilliant performance—making the word apt for both celestial and cinematic scintillating stars. |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day: “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” On a lighter note: I’ve decided I don’t trust stairs. They’re always up to something. |

Little Traverse Bay station isn‘t reporting water temps. Still cold temps out there in the water. Remember, if you are out in a small craft, remember to dress for the water not the weather. |
