Community Calendar for Thursday, February 6th, 2020

From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Thursday, February 6th, 2020.
First some news…
St. James Township Board met last evening for their regular monthly meeting. Main focus of the meeting was an informational session on the new marina property now known as Beaver Island Marina North. Supervisor Kitty McNamara gave a detailed presentation on planned improvements including replacing fuel dispensers, raising the existing docks and addition of floating docks.
The board discussed Grants for the Marina North Project. The primary source for funds acquisition, development and maintenance of Public Harbors is the Michigan Waterways Commission. The Waterways Commission works with the DNR on the use of funds. These are potential funding sources for future improvements. The board voted to proceed with application for grants. They also voted to establish 24 transient and 25 seasonal slips and to explore 2020 rates. In other business, the board noted a meeting scheduled for February 22with the Emergency Management/Army Corp of Engineers to discuss the high-water problems faced for municipal property.

BIRTHDAYS: None on the list today, but if we missed you on the list today, Happy Birthday from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center.
ON THIS DAY in 1952, Britain’s George the 6th dies and Elizabeth becomes Queen. King George dies in his sleep at the age of 56, and his 26-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, succeeds to the throne. She will become the United Kingdom’s longest-reigning head of state.
WORD OF THE DAY: canard (noun) [kuh-NARD] which means a false or unfounded report or story; especially : a fabricated report; a groundless rumor or belief; an airplane with horizontal stabilizing and control surfaces in front of supporting surfaces; also a small airfoil in front of the wing of an aircraft that can increase the aircraft’s performance. In 16th-century France, vendre des canards à moitié was a colorful way of saying “to fool” or “to cheat.” The French phrase means, literally, “to half-sell ducks.” No one now knows just what was meant by “to half-sell”; the proverb was probably based on some story widely known at the time, but the details have not survived. At any rate, the expression led to the use of canard, the French word for “duck,” with the meaning of “a hoax” or “a fabrication.” English speakers adopted this canard in the mid-1800s. The aeronautical sense of canard, used from the early days of flying, comes from the stubby duck-like appearance of the aircraft. (
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday…
Here’s a thought for the day from Thomas Jefferson: “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.”
And, on a lighter note: What did the tree say to the moss? You’re starting to grow on me.
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Thursday, February 6th, 2020. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from the pest free Hogarth Pest Control Studios of the Voice of Beaver Island wishing you a great day and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening.
