News Update

Community Calendar for Thursday, December 8th, 2022

Daniel Thorell has been named the permanent health officer for the Health Department of Northwest Michigan. He became the interim director after the resignation of Lisa Peacock who cited a hostile work environment as the reason for her departure—after a controversial decision to require extended COVID-19 abatement precautions at schools in the department’s jurisdiction.  Health Board Chair and Charlevoix County Commissioner Scott Hankins said that Thorell’s history with the department would make for a smooth transition.  Hankins was among the board members who had been concerned about the decisions being made by Peacock, but at a highly charged meeting where the question of her dismissal came up, he voted to retain her.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron water level declined 4 inches in the past month. Since Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are connected with free-flowing water at the Straits of Mackinac region, hydrologically they are measured as one lake. They’ve gone down by more than two feet since their highwater mark back in November 2020.

Finally this morning, a reminder to fill out the Internet Speed Survey included in your Winter Tax bill.  The data collected will be used to review the accuracy of the FCC Broadband Map that will be used to allocate funding from the Infrastructure Bill for internet improvements. You can also fill out the survey online.  Find it on the B-I-A website at beaver island association dot org.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

BIRTHDAYS:  Pam O’Brien and Norah Scheller are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Norah and Pam, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. [Remember, you can pick your 2023 Birthday Calendar up at the front desk at school. As always, it’s been decorated by Mrs Robert’s class. Proceeds go to fund their spring class trip.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip…but, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1980 Ex-Beatle John Lennon, 40, is shot four times at close range as the singer walks to his apartment with his wife, Yoko Ono. Hundreds of fans will keep vigil for a week at the scene of the shooting, and on what would have been Lennon’s 45th birthday, Ono will dedicate a memorial in the park.

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam Webster word of the day is vandalize (verb) [VAN-duh-lyze], which means “to deliberately damage or destroy public or private property.” Vandalize comes from the noun vandal, which was originally capitalized and referred to a member of a Germanic people who lived south of the Baltic Sea and sacked Rome in the year 455 CE. This sacking is what likely led to the use of the lower-case vandal for someone who damages or destroys property.

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday…

Here’s a thought for the day from John Lennon: “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.”

On a lighter note:  How did the meeting go between the cat and the couch? Cataclawsmic!
