Great Lakes Islands Alliance Unveils Decade-Long Strategic Plan

The Great Lakes Islands Alliance, or GLIA, has announced its strategic plan for the next ten years, aimed at enhancing connections among island communities and addressing their unique challenges. Released on September 4, the plan outlines four primary goals: facilitating community connections, improving access to information, encouraging collaboration across islands, and amplifying the voices of island residents.

Developed over the past year through extensive discussions with island stakeholders, the plan emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about island life among mainland audiences. Angela LeFevre-Welke, chairperson of the GLIA Steering Committee, highlighted the plan as a significant milestone that will help ensure targeted and impactful activities.

The announcement comes just ahead of the fifth Great Lakes Islands Summit, scheduled for September 22-25 near the Les Cheneaux Islands. This event will gather islanders to share solutions on various economic, social, and environmental issues, featuring over 20 speakers and discussions on topics such as tourism and biodiversity.
