From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Monday, March 14th, 2022. |
|
First some news … Friday’s COVID-19 data dump from the state looked good. Seven-day average for new cases is now at 745. Four deaths, it is 43 including reclassifications from prior dates. There were seven new deaths statewide in the two-period covered by the report. Hospital utilization data continue to show good levels for overall use and good trends for COVID-19 occupancy. That stands at 3.9% for regular beds and 5.9% for I-C-U beds. Nothing new on the COVID-19 data front from the Health Center today. No news from the Center. No new tests. No tests pending. No active island cases.
Lake Michigan and Huron are almost back to average levels—and even with where the were in March of 2015, where the basin was at that point. That after years at record levels. The Army Corp of Engineers projections suggest that levels are not likely to rise through the rest of the year and may well decline.
The Charlevoix Library has an exhibit in place celebrating the contributions of women who have helped shape the community. The display, put together by the library’s Michigan Room Committee, includes photos, artifacts, and biographies. It will run through the end of May.
The Charlevoix Circle of Arts display space is once again filled with works of art from area High School Students as part of their Spotlight on Innovation display. The show runs through April 9.

BIRTHDAYS: Sarah McCafferty and Kailonnie Dunsmore are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Kailonnie and Sarah and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
|
TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. Bridges are clear. But the island beltway is a skating rink as are many of the sidewalks in town. So, let’s be careful out there. |

ON THIS DAY in 1991 the Birmingham Six are freed after 16 years in prison. Coerced confessions, police brutality, and muddled forensics are finally revealed as six Irish men see their sentences overturned after being convicted for 1974 IRA pub bombings in Birmingham, England. (Bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: cryptography (noun) [krip-TAH-gruh-fee], which is the enciphering and deciphering of messages in secret code or cipher. For a word having to do with secrets, cryptography has a surprisingly transparent origin. The word comes from Greek kryptós, meaning “hidden” or “secret,” and graphein, meaning “to write.” Besides the familiar related words of the same origin, such as cryptic, there is krypton, the name of a colorless gaseous element used especially in some fluorescent lamps and photography flashes. The name was chosen because the gas is rare and hard to find. (Merriam-Webster) |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Monday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from Paddy Joe Hill, one of the Birmingham Six: “Don’t be sorry for me. Be angry. Because everything that happened to me was done in your name.”
On a lighter note: I tried to write a joke about Pi, but it kept going around in circles. What do you call a leprechaun prank? A Saint Pat trick. |

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, March 14th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
