The Beaver Island Music Festival wrapped up Saturday evening after a fantastic run of music that included The Accidentals and Ragbirds as highlights on Saturday night. The festival grounds were packed with an estimated crowd in excess of 800. No doubt the spectacular weather helped with attendance, but observers say a spectacular line-up of artists is generated the crowds. Planning is already underway for next year. Even with huge crowds at the festival, the BIC Center theater was crowded as well for a performance by Dave Bennett and his Quartet. Other in-town venues were busy as well. “It shows the community can support multiple events,” says Chamber director Paul Cole. As worries about a recession build, economic forecasters in Michigan say the state is not well prepared for the downturn that now seems likely. Businesses still have not fully recovered from the 2008 downturn much less the impact of COVID-19 shutdowns, they say. They also point out the with its manufacturing based economy, Michigan is likely to be harder than other states by the downturn. There’s a detailed analysis in a Bridge Michigan article linked in our script online: https://www.bridgemi.com/business-watch/recession-looming-michigan-business-may-not-be-ready Finally in our news, a special program note: This week is Museum Week and to keep you up to speed on what’s happening, we’ve invited B-I-H-S director Lori Taylor-Blitz to join us on Beaver Island Perspectives this afternoon and every afternoon this week to talk about what’s going on. BIRTHDAYS: Carol Runberg is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Carol and, if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
TRAFFIC: After a busy weekend on the route out to the Beaver Island Music Festival grounds, things have slowed down. The Island Beltway is running smoothly. Bridges are clear. No delays inbound or outbound to the airports, but there are still delays in town when the ferry comes in—lots of hikers and bikers and beach goers. So, let’s be careful out there. |
ON THIS DAY in 1927 a ferocious batter is first to hit four grand. Once described as “daring to the point of dementia,” baseball player Ty Cobb, 22 years a Detroit Tiger, has a surly reputation to match his spectacular play on the field, and now he adds to his legend by getting his 4,000th hit for a double off of his old Tigers teammate, pitcher Sam Gibson while playing for Philadelphia. |
MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: sanction (Verb) [SANK-shun] which, means both “to give effective or authoritative approval or consent to” and “to impose a penalty or economically or militarily coercive measures.” The noun sanction, meaning “authoritative approval” or “a coercive measure,” entered English in the 15th century, and originally referred to a formal decree or law, especially an ecclesiastical decree. (The Latin sancire, meaning “to make holy,” is an ancestor.) The noun’s meaning then extended in different directions. By the end of the 17th century, it could refer to both a means of enforcing a law (a sense that in the 20th century we began using especially for economic penalties against nations violating international law) and the process of formally approving or ratifying a law. When the verb sanction appeared in the 18th century, it had to do with ratifying laws as well, but it soon acquired an additional, looser sense: “to approve.” |
Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Monday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Ty Cobb: “Speed is a great asset; but it’s greater when it’s combined with quickness – and there’s a big difference.” On a lighter note: Why was the D-J so good at bat? He knew how to hit the extra bass. |
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, July 18th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
