From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Monday, February 14th, 2022. |

First some news … On the COVID-19 front, yet another no news is good news day for the Health Center. No new tests. No tests pending. And we are now down to three positive tests on the island that are less two weeks old. There was good news in the data from the state on Friday, too. There were just under 3,000 new cases a day in the two days covered by their report and 21 new deaths a day with 110 deaths reclassified from prior dates. That pushes the seven-day averages down to 3,306 for new cases and to 74 for deaths, including reclassifications. For new cases, those are numbers like we were seeing back in November. We didn’t see a similar big jump in deaths, thankfully, but those numbers are trending down as well. There were 76 new cases a day in our region and four deaths total. 17 of the new cases were in Charlevoix. The deaths were in Grand Traverse with two and Emmet and Otsego with one each. Hospital utilization rates continue to look better. Over numbers are a little above normal, but way off from the highs we had been seeing. SaCOVID-19 occupancy remains high, but again well off the numbers we had been seeing—down from the mid-twenties into the teens. No patients at Munson in Charlevoix. 16 at McLaren in Petoskey, but none in their I-C-U. Finally, a reminder that the BIC Center is back to regular winter opening times this week. Those are 9 to 7 weekdays, 9 to 9 on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. |

BIRTHDAYS: Bill McDonough and Henry Brenden are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Henry and Bill, and, if we missed you on the list Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
|
TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. Still, let’s be careful out there. |

ON THIS DAY in history there’s an interesting collection of events. Of course, legend has it that on this day in 273 Catholic Bishop Valentine, who married couples without Imperial Rome’s consent, is imprisoned, tortured, and beheaded. In 1779, Captain James Cook who explored the Pacific for England gets crosswise with native Hawaiians and meets his end. In 1929 Al Capone sends henchmen to a North Side garage where they line up seven rival gang members and kill them execution-style in a hail of bullets. The St. Valentine’s Day massacre draws enforcement efforts that ultimately lead to Capone’s end. And, on this 2005 YouTube is launched leading to waste of countless hours watching cat videos. WORD OF THE DAY: billet-doux (noun) [bill-ee-DOO], which means a love letter. In French, billet doux means “sweet letter.” English writers first fell in love with the word during the 17th century and have been committed to using it as a romantic alternative to “love letter” ever since. (Merriam-Webster) |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Valentine’s Day… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from Thomas Merton: “Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves- alone we find it with another.” On a lighter note: What did rosemary say when sage proposed? It’s about thyme. |
