Community Calendar for January 17, 2018

Today is Wednesday January 17th, 2018. I’m Greg Doig with today’s WVBI Community Calendar.

Air pollution contributes to high asthma rates in many U.S. cities. And that’s a big problem for blacks and Latinos. They face a lot of exposure to a harmful form of pollution. Angelica Morrison looks at the problem for Great Lakes Today’s series on environmental justice.

At our website, we’ve tried to include everything, but if we’ve missed your event you can easily add it yourself by using the handy “Post Your Event” button in the upper right of the calendar or by sending an email with the details to calendar@wvbi.net<mailto:calendar@wvbi.net>. And, we can make it easy for your events to show up in a nice calendar on your website, too, so you only have to post them once. Your website can show only your events or those plus other categories from the calendar that you choose.

To help coordinate the events we’ve taken the major events for Summer 2018 and compiled them into a nifty little Celebrate Summer 2018 online calendar. Just point your browser at summer.wvbi.net to get the lowdown on everything planned so far for next summer. Then check back from time to time as more events will be added as dates are firmed up.

ON THIS DATE of January 17, 1950 11 men stole more than $2 million from the Brinks Armored Car depot in Boston, Massachusetts. It was the perfect crime–almost–as the culprits weren’t caught until January 1956, just days before the statute of limitations for the theft expired.
DID YOU KNOW THAT In 1963, major league baseball pitcher Gaylord Perry remarked, “They’ll put a man on the moon before I hit a home run.” On July 20, 1969, an hour after Neil Armstrong set foot on the surface of the moon, Perry hit his first, and only, home run while playing for the San Francisco Giants.
WORD OF THE DAY: paralipsis (par-uh-LIP-sis) which means the suggestion, by deliberately concise treatment of a topic, that much of significance is being omitted, as in “not to mention other faults.”

Traffic
Still no delays to report on Beaver Island.

Hey, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

To Lucas, Sophia and all our listeners, life isn’t designed to go as we plan it. Just remember, you can only change the now.
On a lighter note What do you call fifty penguins in the Arctic? Lost! REALLY lost! (Penguins live in Antarctica.)
That’s the WVBI Community Calendar for Wednesday January 17th, 2018.
I’m Greg Doig at WVBI‚ the Voice of Beaver Island. Make today the best day ever, and thank you for listening!
