From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Friday, November 22nd, 2019.
Here’s what’s happening on your island…
Today, Arthritis Foundation exercise program up in the Ray and Ann Stanhope Hangout. That’s at 10:30. St. James Township Board has called a special meeting to consider a grant application for improvements for the fuel dock at its newly acquired marina. That’s at noon at the St. James Governmental Center.
Saturday, Pickleball at the BIC Center from 10 to noon. Movies at the BIC Center, too: Get out your purple top and orange shorts. Dora the Explorer and The Lost City of Gold comes to the big screen with the big sound in the McDonough’s Market Theater at 4. It’s rated PG. At 7, Holly Hunter is going Home for the Holidays—and wondering why. It’s a great family comedy about going home for Thanksgiving. That’s at 7. Rated PG-13.
Sunday, services at Holy Cross, the Lighthouse Fellowship and the Christian Church. Times and details are on the calendar.
Next Monday, the St. James Finance Committee has a meeting at the governmental center. That’s at 1:00 in the afternoon.
Next Tuesday, Pickleball from 10 to noon at the BIC Center and then again in the afternoon from 3:30 to 5:00. And, Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program at 10:30 up in the Hangout. And, Ladies Shuffleboard at the Shamrock at 7.
Next Wednesday evening, the Conference on Faith continues here at the BIC Center. That’ll be at 6.
And, don’t forget, next Thursday—Thursday next week—is Thanksgiving. Wasn’t last week the 4th of July?

Out on the Big Drink… Today NW wind 15 to 20 kt becoming W in the afternoon. A slight chance of rain before 10am. Waves 3 to 4 ft. Saturday WSW wind 20 to 25 kt. Sunny. Waves 6 to 7 ft.
Water temps: 32 at White Shoal—dropping precipitously since yesterday when it read 41. A sensor error?? We’ll see, but White Shoal is the only station still reporting. Fire Danger Level: Low.
TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. But, roads are slick this morning with a dusting of snow over the frozen wet from yesterday. . So, let’s be careful out there—especially in the school zone.
BIRTHDAYS: Master boat maker, builder, basketball coach and Boonies star Dan Burton is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Dan and to you, too, if we missed you on the list – Happy Birthday from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center..
ON THIS DAY in 1963, President John F. Kennedy is shot and killed in Dallas. A sniper kills the 35th US president, as his motorcade wends through Dallas, Texas. Kennedy’s wife, Jacqueline, and the Texas governor are traveling with him. Lee Harvey Oswald will soon be arrested for the shooting, but will be shot and killed himself shortly thereafter.
WORD OF THE DAY: carouse (kuh-ROWZ (“ow” as in ‘cow) which means: 1 : to drink liquor freely or excessively 2 : to take part in a drunken revel : engage in dissolute behavior Sixteenth-century English revelers toasting each other’s health sometimes drank a brimming mug of spirits straight to the bottom—drinking “all-out,” they called it. German tipplers did the same and used the German expression for “all out”—gar aus. The French adopted the German term as carous, using the adverb in their expression boire carous (“to drink all out”), and that phrase, with its idiomatic sense of “to empty the cup,” led to carrousse, a French noun meaning “a large draft of liquor.” And that’s where English speakers picked up carouse in the 1500s, first as a noun (which later took on the sense of a general “drunken revel”), and then as a verb meaning “to drink freely.” (
