News Update

Community Calendar for Friday, November 10th, 2023

Stafford’s Hospitality, which operates an iconic group of hotels in northwest Michigan, yesterday announced the sale of the business to a family-owned company. The new owners are Jon and Lauren Cotton from Grosse Point. They’ve selected Troy-based Hotel Investment Services to manage the group, which includes Stafford’s and the Perry Hotel in Petoskey. The Cottons now own the Hotel Iroquis on Mackinaw Island. The sale is expected to close in January.

With firearms season approaching, the Little Traverse Conservancy has announced which of its preserves will be open to hunting. There are three locations on the island including Barney’s Lake. More information and details on how to secure the required consent to hunt these lands are available at the Conservancy website.  There’s a link in today’s script online. https://landtrust.org/hunting/

And, a few reminders in the news this morning: The Island’s Waste Management Committee is working on securing grant funding to help protect the island’s environment.  To support grant applications with the required data they have a survey out designed to identify blighted locations on the island.  The form is confidential and does not collect information about the submitter. There’s a link in today’s script and on the B-I-A website. https://airtable.com/appc0pOjygapuqBEw/shrAZIxZsa5o925He

Have you left a boat at Barney’s Lake? If so, you need to get it out of there for the winter. There are pictures of the two remaining boast in today’s script online.

And if you are looking for something to do on Saturday, how about helping out for a bit at the library as they winterize their outside gardens. Work gets underway at 10:00 a.m.

Now, here’s a look at what else is happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner:

A-A meets Saturday evening at 6:00 and again next week Tuesday and Thursday at the same time. Next week, the School Board meets Monday at 6:30. Christian Church board meets at 7:00 that evening as well. Beaver Island Transportation Authority meets Tuesday at noon. Peaine Township board meets that evening at 5:30. St. James Public Works Committee meets Wednesday at 11:00. J-TAC meets Thursday at 4:30.  That’s it for the week. Meeting locations and details are in the calendar entries online.

On the fun front today, Friday, things kick off with senior and vets coffee and donuts at the BIC Center 8:00 until 10:00. Pickleball is on again at 10:00. Then, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is upstairs in the Hang Out at 10:30. The Resale Shop is open from noon to 4:00.

Saturday, there will be a Veteran’s Day ceremony lead by the AMVETS at school. It will be in the high school commons rather than the gym because the gym floor is being replaced. That’s at 11:00. The Resale Shop will be open from noon to 4:00. Lego Club is at the library at 1:00. And, there are movies at the BIC Center. At 4:00 it’s the Blue Beetle…another Marvel superhero brought to the big screen in a movie that has rave reviews. Rated PG-13 and is great for the whole family. Then at 7:00 to celebrate Veteran’s Day, it’s Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan. Rated R. Veterans will get a complimentary Nathan’s Hot Dog dinner with a drink and popcorn for the show. Or, just come for dinner; no need to go to the movie.

Sunday there are services at the Christian Church and the Lighthouse Fellowship at 10:00 and mass at Holy Cross at 12:15. Also, this Sunday, get an early start on Christmas shopping with the annual Christmas Bazaar at the Gregg Fellowship Center. Select work from multiple island artists as well as baked goods, coffee and other island delights. Plus, there’ll be soup, a raffle to benefit the food pantry and the opportunity to drop of food for the pantry and unwrapped toys for the toys for tots drive.

Looking ahead to next week…

Monday, C-O-A has Bingocize at the BIC Center at 11:00. And it’s all you can eat salad and pizza at he Shamrock. And, our island Dark Skies will be really dark this evening with the November new moon.

NAME OF DAY: Today’s BIC Center name of the day is Joe. If that’s your name, drop by the BIC Center today for a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS:  Andrew Crandall, Maggie McCafferty, Josh Koziej, and Bryan Ballard celebrate today. Tomorrow it’s Ronan Wearn and Ryann Turner. Happy Birthday to Ryann. Maggie, Ronan, Bryan, Josh, and Andrew, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. And, a reminder: Birthday Calendars for 2024 are being printed now. You can pick yours up at the Christmas Bazaar this Sunday or after that at the B-I-C-S front desk. Proceeds support field trips for Deb Robert’s class at B-I-C-S.

TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. But, let’s be careful out there, especially in the school zone.

ON THIS DAY in 1969 ‘Sesame Street’ debuts featuring Jim Henson’s Muppets, catchy songs, and animated shorts, aims to educate while it entertains young kids. The show will be a huge success, and will be credited as a valuable learning tool, but will also ruffle convention as it tackles serious subjects, such as death, poverty, and AIDS. Also on this date in 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald splits in two and sinks off Whitefish Point in Lake Superior in a wreck that claims the lives of all 29 souls aboard.

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is suffuse (verb) [suh-FYOOZ]. To suffuse something is to spread over it or fill it, either literally or figuratively. The word suffuse is usually encountered in literary contexts. The Latin word suffendere, ancestor to suffuse by way of Latin suffūsus, has various meanings that shed light on our modern word, among them “to pour on or in (as an addition)” and “to fill with a liquid, color, or light that wells up from below.” It’s no surprise, then, that suffuse refers to the action of fluid or light spreading over or through something, as when light fills a dark room when you crack open a door. Suffundere is a blend of the prefix sub- (“under” or “beneath”) and the verb fundere (“to pour” or “to send forth”). Other English verbs related to fundere continue the theme of pouring or spreading: diffuse (“to pour out and spread freely”), effuse (“to pour or flow out”), transfuse (“to cause to pass from one to another”), and the verb fuse itself when it’s used to mean “to meld or join.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday

Here’s a thought for the day from Kermit the Frog: “Always be yourself. Never take yourself too seriously. And beware of advice from experts, pigs, and members of parliament.”

On a lighter note: Why was the big bird sitting all alone? He was ostrich sized.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Friday, November 10th, 2023. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening.
